*This is a translation from Russian of a poem written by Vladimir Mayakovsky in 1913.

A Little Something about Petersburg

From roofs, the tears seeped into pipes,
And to the river’s hand drew streaks,
While lips, suspended from the skies
Were gently sucking on stone teats.

The sky, relaxed, could now see clearly:
Where shines the sea’s resplendent mantel,
The sweating cameleer drove wearily
The Neva’s* lazy, two-humped camel.
