I remember an idea a long time ago that involved us having discussions about pieces of poetry in the literary canon, where every week/month/whatever we'd have a certain poem brought up for discussion.  I still think this would be fun if it were organized and made viable somehow.

We could at least try it, and see if it generated interest.  I'd personally like to see PiPTalk members taking some interest in the writing of our predecessors.

Does anyone else think this is a cool idea?  Feedback please.

I would love to do this. I think it would help my creative juices...and I'd get to read poetry that I might not other wise take the time to read!

Count me in...

Can we start with Blake? You KNOW I miss our discussions Brian, and I think it would be a great idea to get everybody's input!

I think it's a great idea, too.

Karen, Blake's a little advanced... no offense meant to anyone in this poetry community.  I was thinking of someone a little friendlier until we get our feet wet with this whole poetry-interpretations thingie... maybe Wordsworth?

PDV, thanks for your interest!

Didn't mean to lead... by no means!  I've actually been studying Blake a lot lately, and it so happens that every time I think I'm right about him, I end up being wrong.  He requires a lot of backreading...

I miss our conversations too, but I never see you online anymore.  By the way, I have a ten dollar phone card just collecting dust in my pocket, if you ever wanted to chat on the telephone...

I just checked and you are one of my peops I lost during a "stoned" update. (Surgery and mepagam, yanno) Just add me? I'm still as invisable as always, but when I'm able, I do chat and as for the phone thing? The insane hubby has been home all summer, and I swear if he hears me talking about assonance he thinks it's phone sex!

and hey? Somebody should at least take charge, and it might as well be you. I nominate LP! Anybody second the motion?

Nominations are a bit ahead of schedule, considering memberships are still pending.

I say we wait and see who else is interested before thinking of whether or not someone should "head" the project.  Personally I was hoping PDV would at least help with it, considering she's so good at managing these little side-projects...

okay...it's all good with me, and I'm assuming the discussions will take place here, right? Right.

I'll be looking...

I'm thinking we'd just start a new thread every now and then discussing a "poem of the week" or something, with an external link to the poem (so Ron doesn't get upset with us posting other people's poems) for everyone to read, so we can discuss it.

I'd rather not put all of the discussion in one thread, just because it'd get too jumbled and confused.

If Mysteria and Essorant are interested, hey, that's great!     Would love to see some contributions.

If this is a weekly thing and not pinned to a certain day, you'll see me stopping in a bit.

Michael should start a discussion on Poe's Alone. Without question, our resident poet has shown a "unique" understanding of Poe's message in his response, Walking Alone.

If it's not something that has a set or pre-defined day or time for participation, I'd be interested in learning and discussing as well LP.

Ron, if Brian moves forward with this, do you think the discussions should be in an existing discussion forum, or would it be possible to create a new area just for this purpose?  That may help to keep it a bit more structured and easier to follow along for those who wish to participate. It would also create an interesting archive for others to browse through on past discussions.

If I understand Brian's idea, it could work similarly to Nan's poetry workshop, where a current discussion or thread is "open", but past thread(s) from the month before (or the poem discussed before), become locked so as not to lose focus on the current or new topic and poem at hand?

I love the idea Brian, and I think you'd do well to take charge of it.

I think we should see if it generates a good response before we devote it to its own forum, personally.  If this thing just flops over then we're going to have another empty forum collecting dust, right?

We could just try it for a few weeks in say, the family dialogue, and see if it goes over well.

I honestly don't know if I should be in charge of it... I don't mean to pin the responsibility for my idea onto anyone else, I just have a bad habit of leaving for long periods of time, especially with school starting.

I was thinking it could just be handled by everyone... the only administrative decisions I can see having to take place are what new poems are going to come up.  Other than that I don't see why anyone has to take charge...

Notice how Ron said that Michael should start a discussion about that poem.  That's more how I meant it to work... we all just bring forth a poem now and then, and talk through it to try and come to an understanding of it.

"God becomes as we are that we may be as he is."  ~William Blake

An important turn-off to poetry was, for me, many years ago, a young professor's insistance on his particular interpretation of a dead man's poem.
But that was my problem.
He might well have been spot on, arrogance notwithstanding.  What did I know?

I think this could work here.
Good idea.
Let's give it a run.

In formerdays when people brought forth general parliaments and debates and contraversy into Critical Analysis, that was when that forum seemed to flourish best, and people might have critique they deserved more often and not lack so much attention.  I think this is in the substance of that forum and perhaps it may fit best there.  Indeed, attending and analyzing a poem by Chaucer, Shakespeare, Pope etc,  may be a very good thing to have beside attending and analyizing a poem by a member.  Perhaps the two shall bring more attention each other and meet somewhere in a more fruitful middle ground.  Just a suggestion.

I think Pete may be an excellent advisor on this.

I think Brian is just being shy... he is not only a great choice to start something like this, but he would definately be far more capable than myself at keeping something like this organized, especially considering the hours I work.

I agree it would be great if we could all start our own discussions, Brian, we would just need a little guidance in the "time to move on" and "who's next" departments.

I'd be happy to see these discussions happening in the workshop.  I'm unbearably busy now with my schedule, so I can't think of any reason why we can't work on writing our own poems and discussing the masters as well...
