Maybe this should be for Philosophy 101, but why do clocks always go clockwise? Or do they go counter-clockwise south of the equator? Sure, you could number it backwards, then make the clock run counter-clockwise (or would that be called clockwise, then)? But if a clock has no numbers, then the whole thing is arbitrary and makes no difference which way it runs as long as you know which way it's going.

I don't own a lot of clocks, but none of the few I have go clockwise.

Mine are digital..they blink at 12:00 when the electricity goes out...actually:

Before there were mechanical clocks, people told the time using clocks called sundials. They were set up outside, in sunlight. The bright sunlight casts a shadow on the face of the clock (it's dial.) As the sun moves in the sky, the shadow moves on the sundial's face. When the first clockmakers built mechanical clocks, they made the hands on their clocks move the same way the shadows moved on a sundial.

There! Mystery solved. Next case!

because if they went counter-clockwise, they wouldn't be clocks, they'd be counter-clocks.

Interesting notion. P'raps we should consult Severn, our resident New Zealander. She should be able to shed some light on this esoteric conundrum. I do know that water spins down the drain counter-clockwise south of the equator, but not sure of clocks....

I found one that turns counter-clockwise...

... and...I know this really neat place - A house that's so full of clocks, there's no room for ANYTHING else... every corner of every table and every inch of every wall is covered with clocks.. all different types...  and I do believe they all turn in a "Colon-Wise" direction... There's even a clock on a post in the front yard... You should hear the noise when the hour hits...

It's really an awesome house... a museum of sorts... The people there tried their best to sell one of them to Ron too... but they just couldn't find one that would chime on the dot of "SOON"....
