Sudden searing pain,
stunning me
blindsided  the news
and like a lancer
three words spoken,
fell me now
you have cancer

the buzz I hear is deafening
what is this horrific sound
breath caught in mid gasp
feel the trembling of the ground

swallow quickly the bile of anger
eyes closed to the truth I hear
surgery – radiation – recovery
'I'm afraid it's cancer my dear'

odds and statistic by rote
I hear one in three
Why this punishment is given
to threaten the life of me

And so I wait for results
malignant – stage one it seems
thus with those three words
shatter my hearts dreams

hope is given; chances good
all can be removed and cured
but still I feel the confusion
of the fear that has been stirred.

*Normally I don't write about myself..but this is an exception. Words fail me most times lately as the muse has drifted away. Just some thoughts tossed my way in the coming weeks for surgery and recovery...thanks!

Sharon, my friend...

My husband had this same news not only 10 years ago [every tumor IS a cancer] but also last March, when the colon cancer tumor WAS malignant, but hadn't spread. Stage 2.

He didn't have much time between the finding and the surgery to "deal" with the reality; Colon cancer being what it is, and in our community [small according to city statistics] he was able to get right in for surgery without much verbal "let's think about it" being done. He was cleansed for the scope...let's get 'er done with the surgery.

A grapefruit tumor and 20 lymph nodes removed....six months of chemo with two week sitting in the chair, and we're nearly done with all good signs saying "you're a survivor!"

I know you don't write about yourself, honey...Stage 1...is curable!!! You can get through this!

And I'm in your corner!!

How can there be a verdict without a crime?

my sweet friend, this is such terrible news, and I am stunned.

I hate this vicious unrelenting disease--and I have been wishing for answers too, for a long time now, but just know, however clumsy I am right now saying this, that it is not your punishsment for some crime.

You are such a good person m'friend, and I'm so sorry you're going through this, and I apologize for my lack of grace and ineloquence--I'm completely distraught.

I love you lady.

Ditto K, okay?  Call.  Need anything,  you got it lady!  That is one scary word, but one they can squish like an ant under an elephant's foot nowadays.  Just know you have friends here that really do care, and we hope you will turn to us okay?

How're things going, Sharon? We had a setback; with two chemo treatments remaining, there was some kind of infection...they haven't determined just what, but my spouse has been put off treatment for a few weeks in order to heal up from the volcanic infection that literally erupted last Sunday....antibiotics have helped, of course, but a full healing is required prior to more chemo.

Of course the question will be...since this was "preventative" chemo, does he need to continue?

We will find out near the end of October. So, please get on line and tell us how you are doing...and how we might help?

Hugs

K

Had a couple of issues of my own..surgery is set for October 1.

I appreciate all the care, love and prayers. I will be staying with my daughter so no internet access for a bit. I've left a list of emails with my son for 'worst case' scenerios...hopefully you will hear from ME and not him. Thanks again. See you all soon!

Things are ok...it's nice not to have the uncertainty of the 'problem'...(won't go into details). I am tentative about my activities though and very nervous. I'll have to have a check up every 3 months for a while..but that's easy to deal with.

I want to say - ladies, don't be shy about going to the doctor about out of the ordinary functions of your body - I got mine quickly - it scared me..and turned out to be easy to fix..stage one..so don't let it go..no matter what it is..it's better to KNOW then to let go...

I'm sorry I didn't get back sooner, Sharon...we ran into a bit of a problem ourselves with himself. BUT, like you, all is good now...and you will keep on your toes in 2011, right?

Merry Christmas, my friend. Thank you for all of the help you've given me this last decade plus.
