Before My Time

I have to laugh to hear one say
I carry my age well.
I do the math day by gray day,
…Still wake feeling like hell.
Am I the only one who sees
These tired, soulless eyes
Have paid full this toll of disease,
If not sanctioned its prize?

I feel his hand upon my back,
He’s with me everywhere.
I turn to face the empty black
Of night… nothing else there!
A quiet peace come over me,
I walk -- but not alone --
Unto that date with destiny;
The penance all my own.

Weakest, by far, of brothers five,
I was bound to be first.
Chanced, that inequity might thrive,
Have continued on… cursed.
Admittedly not in my prime,
I move on slow and steady.
And though I die before my time,
It’s not before I’m ready.

Am I the only one who sees
That tinge upon the skies?
Or tastes the dryness in a breeze
Of Death donned in disguise?
With all regret hope might envision,
Stand I still at the gate…
Calculating an indecision
That most mistake for fate.

Where, giving toast that none may hear,
I drink beyond my fill.
For it’s not death of soul I fear,
So much as death of will.
And I, the only one who sees
Its madness beyond mending,
In truth am, simply by degrees,
The only one not pretending!

Well, Michael, how the hell are ya?

(grin)

It's good to see you over here--and yanno? We don't get to decide.

Weird, this "life" stuff.

You spend the first half trying to assimilate, and the second half trying to dissociate, and the third half trying to sleep.

Oh.

smile

That sleep thing's important.

See you at the Table in the mornin'.

Or afternoon.

MUAH. You gotchyer rhythms back lovie. And keep the grays. They read good on ya.

love,

k

Good morning to you, my friend..

This is exquisite, of course.  You always make me stop in my own tracks long enough to appreciate the rest.

I truly hope you're well and enjoying the holidays.  God Bless, Michael..

Oh Michael … it is REALLY wonderful to be surprised here this morning to read you!

I’ve missed your insightful, questioning poems. They always tug at the core of me.

After reading this ... I find myself contemplating “destiny” vs. “choice or free will”.  I’ve been sitting here for the last half hour now, pondering on circumstances and decisions made within my own life, and how circumstances, choices or destiny have played out over time as I watch ... almost as an observer as opposed to a participant. I’m not sure why my mind went this direction, but it’s been cathartic, and I thank you for that.

It’s great to read you again. Thanks for starting my morning off with a wonderful poem to contemplate.

Best wishes,
/Kit
