I'd have put my lips
to hers in a final taste
of the sun on days
George's old Ford was broken down again
and Iambe was tired of toil
then decided to play with me
along the banks of the creek

But the casket was closed
and so was I

as I sat in the back next to the door
hoping to escape before
I had to look Jake in the eye
or See Dillon cry

"Amen"
the preacher said
as he in dark suit finished
praying to a God Iambe
had doubted with laughter
and debated angrily
after a couple of Jack's

I rose quietly
and stepped towards the door
knowing my lips now were dry
and the cracks
might never heal

I didn't need Clark's Road now
and I didn't need to know
the first shovel full of dirt
thrown on her
would echo off the bluff
down by Johnson's creek

I had enough echoes
and the empty inside
left too much room for them
to bounce around

haunting me
with the lonely sound
of gone

Ron~

I almost didn't read this b/c the title contains the word "funeral".  I am not sure why I avoid everything surrounding death but I do and have since my first "funeral".

However, I swallowed hard, and read...

I am glad I did.

morning Susan... well..the title and the opening may indeed set some people back. I wrote it this morning in response to an e-mail from Duncan... trying to goad him into finishing what he has started..lol..

sorry if the title was uncomfortable...

Have you ever read William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying? You should.

Sunshine... your welcome...

Mikey.. lol.. saying I need to read it and see how it is truly done??? ( just kidding)

I have read some of faulkner's work, but it has been years. Perhaps I need to dust him off the book shelf and revisit...
