The Ninth Day

Numb on the ninth,
she continued her count
of faith’s final moments,
upon abacus
of grandmother’s pearled
rosary

Eyes in glazed fix upon
chipped ivory crucifix

Yet,

Her last day
novena brings
forth no
savior from passive
unrest,

Paralyzed
prayer

A rote penance of
“Hail Marys”
allows not
forgiveness when
eyes see sacraments
as senseless
sacrifice

Kneeling at bedside
still clinging to strand
of grandmother’s
faith,
she whispers her final
act of contrition,
as beads trickle from
clenched fist,
crucifix imprints
palm...

Faith
broken
by faith.

Patricia...extremely moving.
To write against one's faith...
just to get it out...
is not easy.

But you did it!
