Where were you
when love changed to need?
Tell me, please,
the exact location
you were standing in --
perhaps in the shadow of a statue,
or in the throes of a good read.

I just want to know, from your lips,
what exactly occurred
that changed love to need.
What made companionship
into a championship?
What turned the satisfaction
of shared moments
into fingered pearls,
a chain of grommets?

Oh, I've already written
for years
about those sails
dipping to taste the waves.
But I don't think I ever made
the ghostly vastness of
dripping, drowned canvas
apparent before today.

That trail of water
from swimming in, snared,
after them -- then
turned to rain.
What turned love to need?
Sun in the mirror
to a ghost in the pane.
