I once knew a couple
who were at their most ecstatic
when inconsolably depressed.

He would come home
with head hung low,
and murmur a meek hello.

Oh dear, she'd say.
What awful thing happened?
I bet it won't top mine.

Oh, he'd say.
I don't know if that's true.
I was again denied a raise.

(secretly she knew
this definitely topped
her running out of milk --

but that bowl of cereal
waiting in vain
was a most disturbing sight)

That's dreadful, love,
she'd begin with tact,
and go on to relay her misfortunes.

Their roll call of disaster
would stretch on for hours,
both actual and embellished.

Recounting would invariably
lead to tears
and the lighting of many candles.

Well, one night, weeping
on a midnight drive
through a lesser part of the Valley,

they were surprised by a helmet
that lay in their lane,
shining in their headlights.

They clipped a guardrail
to avoid the obstruction
and swerved to the opposite lane,

where they hit the divider,
then spun back out
and stalled there, facing the crush.

I will leave out
the vivid, lurid, brutal
final description.

They died en route.
Needless to say
that was the happiest night of their lives.

Touche'.

Left me wondering about the poor soul who lost the helmet, tho...

(and I knew this other couple...grin.)

Maybe I'll save that story for the book, huh?

Enjoyed.

I'm off to reprogram my brain now.

om mani padme om...
