Not Letting Go

I hear their voices
In my own
Smelling of coffee,
Toast and home
(Hearing laughter,
Oh, that’s me!)
Caught a glimpse of
Smiling memories

I’m told, “let go,
They’re gone, and
Let it be.” But no,
See palm of hand?

These are the lines
Of my birth,
What make me!
Thus, my worth,
For this is curve
Of fingertip
That lays gentle
Upon those lips
That say “let go”
And “let it be”,
Don’t you know?
They’re memories.

If I were to
Just leave it go
Carry forward,
Even so,
All that’s me
Is what they were
It’s how I carry
Myself in sure.

If it were as simple
As you think it be,
Then think again
For don’t you see?
That when you’re gone
As good things go,
I’d not remember
Why I loved you so.

So forgive me if
I dally in days
Where when once was
But a dusty gaze
And as I travel
Roads long gone,
It’s toward a future
That I’m leaning on.

So I’m not letting go,
And that is that,
I’ll sit in chairs
In which they sat,
I’ll cherish bowls
Their own hands held,
And carry stories
In thought to tell
These young ones that sit
Around my knee
In hopes they’ll keep
Sweet memories.

You know that I know bout not letting go...
and as long as it inspires you like this...
I hope you never do.

"How could I stand here with you and not be moved by you."

And it is in that way that you honor those who have gone on... by going on with the things they instilled in you, by living, and by sharing their legacy with others through your own life. I really enjoyed this, I'm adding it to my library!

Oh, make me Thine forever
And should I fainting be
Lord, let me never ever
Outlive my love for Thee

OUCH!!!!!!
This one hit a little too close to home. It is a very outstanding job all the way around.

We are all equal but we’re individually different

It's hard to grow up and watch your friends remain in the same mindset that you left them in

Memories help us retain some of who we are, and what we would still like to be - even against the pull of day to day life.  Some of my fondest times are lovely little snippets that I can lounge through when I need a pick-me-up.  Loved this, a'course!

I like your critique message, even if it doesn't really ask for critique at all.

It's important to cherish memories, instead of shun them and try to move on from them.  You're right, they are what shape us, create us... we are who we are because of the things we've learned and accumulated in our memories.

This is an interesting contrast to your other poem of irreplacable loss, as in memory, no things are lost... it makes me wonder if you meant to make such a distinction with these two poems.

I always love reading you, Karilea, and I'm sorry I haven't gotten the chance to lately.  Thanks for posting in Sanctuary where you knew I'd find it.

In an emergency.
