The levee walk was a black damp
That you could leave footprints in
As you followed the bank in and out
Of wisps of fog that the river sloughed off
To float along its edges when it got tired.

Unseasonably cold, the old man said
While pulling his collar up and urging
A small wire haired companion to come along
By tugging on the chain leash.

My own color seemed no defense
Against the wind that so enjoyed scattering
Bits of refuse from one place to another
Only to turn it around and send it back.

Each step seemed to have purpose
Though inside I felt none and each
echoed in the empty of me, to mock the mystery
until as if a Chinese gong, each resonated deep
within the sounds of me.

it was profound emptiness
absent the warmth of even my own heart
to let me know I was not alone that drove me
towards light and the warmth of a bar stool
where a double shot to drive out the chills

I returned later to my room
And opened the door knowing I would lie cold
On sheets changed just this morning
wishing I could be touched or touch
something besides these spectral  half seens
being dreamed inside

I realized she owned the most
And I nothing

Wow guy... this is just terrific.  I really, really enjoyed reading this, it sucked me right in and I savoured every word and every line.  You've worded it all so well that I had trouble remembering it was a poem, instead of something like, a movie, or an actual experience.  So having read it only once, I can't even remember if it had any rhyme or rhythm, just because of how atmospheric it was for me...

I haven't read something like this in too long... thank you for breaking that silence for me, Ron.  I'm putting this in my personal library.

Excellent, excellent work...

Atmospheric, now there's a word that
can relate to your skyward writing...

Thank god for bodies of water to stand next to, huh Ron? Where would poetry be without the lapping of water on eroding stones and levees?
