Sandpaper, eh?  Unborn vs Buried suggests some sort of lifecycle thing... and I'm not sure how sandpaper relates to that exactly.  Maybe you mean how it slowly wears something down until it is gone?

Is that the function of the word "sandpaper," as something that slowly and subtly softens to death?

Hard to tell.  I like the word "sandpaper" too.  It's a high-quality word.  

Clear that up for me though, ok-ay?
