Little Bit was oiled and primed
sitting down at the other end
she raised her glass to me--and then?
I raised mine back again.

Then she patted seat
beside her
motioning her head
and mouthed the words,
"come sit with me."
I felt the twinge of foreshadow--
I downed another shot of "dead."

I looked around and mocked
"Who? ME?"
(for she and I were cautious friends)
she was a stick of dynamite
and I, a raging fire.
We knew this
so respectfully
we kept distance
knowing how
sometimes things just blow.

But we were drunk
and it's hard to have
good judgement
on those foggy nights
when tequila tastes like water
no salt
no lemon
needed.

So I grabbed my glass
and idled down.
We sat and joked
and drank and smoked
while she bemoaned
her sorry state
of boredom with her man.

I listened to her quietly
even drunk
I had more sense
than she did at her best.
Little Bit
was "not quite right"--
since that night
so long ago
but much too recent
in her mind..
she'd asked her husband
for divorce
packed her bags
went home to mom--
the baby would be welcome there--
they sat in house with their breath held
and waited--knowing--he would call.

Sure enough--when the phone rang
her mother took it off the hook.
But Little Bit knew Sal quite well
and said she knew that wouldn't do.

It wasn't long before he came.
He drove his Mustang
on the lawn
headlights glaring
rage right through
the picture glass window--
a spotlit stage of Little Bit
wondering what was up with him--

and then she saw the gun.

She couldn't even duck she said.
She was frozen there in fear.
She saw the flash of trigger pulled--
blood and brain and bits of bone
a Mustang needing overhaul--
a little girl just one year old--
was all that Sal had left behind...
that and hauntings in her mind.

No wonder she was always bored.
That's a hard act for a man to follow.

But I listened to her tale of woe
about her new man being NICE--
so nice that he was just "a drag"--
she was looking for some spark.

I observed the dynamite
and noted wish to self-destruct...

I knew the subject of complaint--
a biker who loved gardening,
a gentle soul with gentle ways--
Yes, Little Bit was crazed--
so I sighed and told her so.

"Do you WANT him?"
I shrugged. "Sure."
oh what-the-hell?
I'm not doing too much else--
this weekend, I am free."

So we left the bar
on this whim--
a reckless drive
to his house
thankfully
not far away
in a suburb off I-10.
She parked the car
half in the street
and we got out
and tried to knock
but the house was dark--
locked up tight
and Little Bit
did not have a key.

"I know he's in there"
but I said, "hey,
why don't we just leave?"
But she just said,
"No. I've got to pee."

So she tossed her car keys
aiming for
his window
on the second floor--
where they rested
now on ledge.

Uh oh.
(This was getting bad.)
and then it just got worse.

He opened up his window
and I could hear him curse
too quietly
to believe
his anger was for real.

He grabbed her keys
and closed the window
even taking care
to move a statuette
or something--
shadowing in there--
before he shut the glass.

He opened up the door
and then the raging fight began.
She was laughing
while she peed
told him
she "gave" him to me--
and I was sitting quietly
in a huge stuffed chair.

"I want you out"
He said to her.
His voice was quiet rage.
"Get out"
This time he turned
his stare to me,
as she headed for the door.

"No." I said, and met his eyes.
I put my purse upon the floor.
"I'm not going until I know
that you aren't mad at ME."
Little Bit just looked surprised
and said, "Well, hey,
I'm outta here."

She shut the door
and she was gone
leaving me with him.

I just sat there
while he stormed
around the house
then up the stairs
he had gone on
up to bed
and left me sitting there.

I tip-toed up those stairs
they creaked
so I guess he wasn't much surprised
to hear me knocking timidly
and I heard him sigh...
"I'd just like a shirt" I said.
"I will sleep down on the couch."

He opened door and found me there--
quite naked with my hand held out.

That was on a Friday night.
Saturday? I wore his clothes.
Sunday he bought me toothbrush.
Monday, he drove me home--
and waited while I packed a bag.

Yep, that's how we began.

like the story... and glad you decided to share with us mere humans ( chuckling)

you write a few more of these and add them to the ones you have alrady written, then send them off to a publisher... you have aknack for bringing to the reader the feel and life of the characters..

can't edit out what is bothering you about it kid..... you know that and so do I. You can change it...and you can gut it... but you won't edit out what is there unless you deny it.

Still more awesome 'reporting' from your pen.
Your stories always draw me in and won't let go.
This was no exception.
Thanks for sharing it.

I appreciate ya'll going to the trouble to read these rather long-winded stories...if they get boring, just yank me off the stage!

Thanks again...'tis a strange life indeed.

Ah, so that's it, eh?

I observed the dynamite
and noted wish to self-destruct...

Exactly.

smiling, and Wind and fire can do some damage together, eh Liz?

and I am actually a little weirded out that this popped back up--I just ran into "Little Bit" yesterday. Hadn't seen her for years.

Methinks she's a "little bit more" insane than even I recall...

Thanks for reading--I figured everybody was bored with my stories by now.

(Did I ever tell ya'll about that time...)

just kidding.

er.

maybe.

Love to all.
