The canvas filled with dirt,

water paint away.

Underwater songs of spoons;

grasped them with gloved hands.

(thanks to Temptress for this idea
a little while back)

ahem...glancing at the kitchen guiltily--

"underwater songs of spoons"

There's one of those resonating phrases again...

curious as to inspire for this, Mikey?

I am having some difficulty leaping from the first two lines to the last two...hmmmm...
intrigued though. Don't tell me yet...sometimes? I LIKE to think!

Then, do not read down until you give up.

Believe me, nothing deep about this!

The canvas filled with dirt =
dirty dishes.

water paint away =
water to clean said dishes.

Underwater songs of spoons =
anybody who does dishes
knows this one by heart.

grasped them with gloved hands =
the water's too hot without gloves!

See? A meaningless little throwaway. But I enjoyed the Underwater songs of spoons part too much to not post.

It was inspired by a chat with Jenn. I said "I have to go soon and do the dishes -- there is no poetry in that."

She said "Sure there is!"

So I tried writing the poem. Originally, I didn't have an ending line, and the poem trailed off with "... ugh this sucks."

Meaning the poem,
but I guess,
the dishes, too.

I just spent way too much space explaining this trifle.

Much thanks for readin' it.

Truly y'made me smile.

My uncle once taught me something about poetry in dishwater. I was just a kid--weeping about my chore with what looked like a mountain of dishes before me. And? In total sympathy? and an "aw, what's da matta?" attitude. He taught me to run the water nice and warm and sudsy...and? to concentrate on one thing at a time, instead of what was left to be done. Then he stood next to me drying while I washed, singing and joking the whole time.

No such thing as a "toss off" poem Mike.
You just brought back an important lesson and a beautiful memory. Thank you.

Wow... I'm glad to have touched you so.

Then this poem has survived its purpose,
three-fold.

Thank you for sharing that memory with me.

Mikey
