Can a poet taste sincerity?
Can we write with the flavor of truth?
Can we pen the odor of futility,
or the burning sting of joy?
Can we as poets, capture
the color of honesty?
In our scribbles?
In our fevered writings?
Can we artists, self-proclaimed
speakers of beauty,
imprison life's essence in ink?

Or do we just dance a dirge
of delusion?  A frenetic tango
of self-importance?
Do we type our inane lusts
in the computers of illusion
and call them scripture?

I think not.
We share the climax of speech
in heavenly form.
We express the weary world
in the fury of our odes.
We offer a respite from
reality's bite.
Through the soothing
balm of our lyrical prose,
We are the healers,
of broken souls
the dreamers of dreams spoken,
and instigators of fantasy realized.

Believe me, JP, NOTHING I write even remotely resembles scripture! The questions your poem asks are probably answered differently by everyone. Some poets think they DO write all those things...are they the ones blinded by their own 'supposed' talent?

Do you think ANY writer(poet) can achieve what you are asking?

Now you've gone too far...if I was a 'healer of broken hearts' would mine then not be mended? Or can't a poet mend their own heart, only those of strangers?

Your poem(poetry) gets better and better....

If a poet sees dishonesty
Can he describe it in his words
Can he show the pain it causes
Heal the hurt with ellipses?

Does the word ‘soul’ mean
That the poet really sees it
Can a poet feel love
by just writing the word?

Will my exclamation points
Excite the fever of your reading
Will you find my passion
In those dots and dashes

Or will they wither here
To dust and ashes?

If my words could mend
Broken hearts
I would start with mine
Selfishly I suppose
But therein lies the
Fantasy of this poem
The truth is no one knows

Does not the poet's
expression of self-pain
serve as a display of
Buddah's mustard seed?
Does it not show our pain
as everyone's pain?
Our cracked and tattered hearts,
no more worn or abused
than those about us.
Does this commonality
serve to ease suffering?
Does not our lack of
unique despair.
Allow us to heal?

This melancholy poet
Feels the pain of all
Tis a burden born
With unwelcome distress
I can say I understand
But do I?
Can I feel that pain
Which you bear?
I can only hold your
Heart
And ease the pain
With a smile
And a word
The poetry of
empathy

(sigh) Oh JP, this is so very thought-provoking indeed, sweet friend, I believe while all our answers would contradict themselves that that is truly the magic of poetry: there is no wrong answer! (big hugggsssssss) This is excellent, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet JP, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton
