Sweating in that old gray tent
under Momma’s watchful eye
singing loudly by my side
gettin’ that spiritual high

Brother Bob stalks the front
like a tiger on the prowl
preaches fiery damnation
he quakes out his holy howl!

After all the Godly singin'
we file out into the night
shake the hand of Brother Bob
til Momma’s out of sight

But then the good Brother
comes sniffing round my skirt
telling me he’ll heal my soul
he promises it won’t hurt

Scared and tired of grownups
I push his hands away
ee tells me that I’ve sinned
for me, he’s gonna pray

I run home and confess
to Momma about Brother Bob
she slapped me hard and shushed
my confession’s childish sob

Every night of that revival
I pretended to be sick
hoping that my momma
wouldn’t catch on to my trick

I still think of those summer nights
as though they were just today
the creepy feeling that I had
when the preacher began to prey

Sharon

This shook out some memories for me
of a little girl and guilt,
and adults who don't believe
in order to believe in the "correct"
order of things.

Very heart wrenching writing, and well done!

Geeze....gritty slice of lifer, deVine, and unfortunately very truthful of a segment of the itenerant preachers.

Sharon-
Very powerful write on a sad and extremely
disturbing subject.
Thanks for sharing this.

PoetdeVine~
Lordy Lordy ...
This one is so real feeling it makes my skin crawl~

Gal ... I won't say what I 'really' think - but keep him clear of me ! !
Or there's gonna be one 'Preacher Man' pushing up daisies~

Now ... I'm gonna take a bath !
GREAT WRITE~

Skin crawling is a good analogy... It surely is... It's astounding to me that so many use the guise of the ministry to hide their personal agendas... sad..

It does take me some time to get places--

You know how I feel about this one, and lest I start another discussion that I do not have the stamina for, I will simply say,

WELL DONE!
