Beneath It All

seemingly, a despicable task
dirt beneath fingernails that needed purged
she sewed her feelings to a mended sleeve
while the rest of her robe unraveled
one silken thread at a time
seldom-asked-to-the-dance, she was ignored
yet never forgiven for looks that made her God's disciple
yielding to a bequest that she felt was more pity than favour
she said yes
when I asked her to dance
We shamelessly pranced thru wavering reed-people
hollow, unbending faces so much taller than us
so they could look down on us I supposed
I awakened her Eden with a kiss when the dances were done
of course she could never possess the luxury of my soul
of course she cried with grievous expulsion of want
For all the nights the lamb went hungry
and no-one troubled themselves to ask her
for but a single dance.
God - forgive me for not seeing that her appearance
was but a silent wall
the Princess lurked behind her vision of alabaster white
We broke down that monument together -
with furious fury and purple-heart medals freshly shined
with tailored lasting memories those evenings
Changed forever, we both gained confidence in ourselves
for all of our dances
yet to come

(a true story of a great friendship during highschool and college)

This is nicely done...I like the hopeful note at the end.

Wow, a great piece about finding the beauty within a person. Loved the last three lines, what a sequel it hints at.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

What a very sweet memory. Not many people would create, and then hold dear such memories...beautiful!
