An elderly woman and an elderly man
Far apart from each other, living alone.
Reflecting on memories of past love.
Opening a chest, an old place where..

Where moments of two hearts joined.
Moments when hearts beat with desire.
Moments when sighs and tears flowed.

Her weathered, arthritic hands open a book
A book of memories of yesteryear.
She opens to a weathered page, time worn..
Eyes tearing, lip quivering...she reads..

Love, can I express the joy of night
Of times soft, of times of delight.
Can I hold your heart as you mine
Will this love grow, become entwine?

Thousands of miles away...same time..
A man, elderly, crippled hands..
Opens a book, one kept beside his bed..
Turning the pages...to one with a flower.
A withered rose, crushed by the pages.

He reads a poem..one which he wrote..

Love, can I express the joy........

Each read, reflect of yesteryear.
A sigh, a soft shudder, matching tears..
Holding the books...each sits...remembering
Slumber takes them to dreams...where...

They meet...for the very first time..

Magnus, this is exceptional! That last line really brings it all together!!!! I felt so sad for the old man and woman. I love a poem that can evoke an emotional response from me! Beautiful writing!!!

This is so unbelievably romantic, Barry...I sure hope that they get together...
You need to write the companion poem to this one...the one where they finally get to meet somehow.
