a thought of poets dead aborning

i followed a thought
like i traced the gentle shift
of a soaring note dipping
from the mouth of a saxophone
better fit for roaring,
like i hiked a summer-parched
streambed to its source
to see how i might find
untethered unemcumbered companions
for journeys of the spirit

i followed the trail of a thought
like i was an ear stretched out
on the wings of duelling banjos
like i belonged to the twist and leap
of every pregnant salmon in spring
to find one pool deep enough
for the birthing of my
young

i followed a thought
like i was a song always
at the threshhold of its
singing, looking for
the sweetest coda, yet
also like i was perched on
a leaf barreling towards
the embracing roar of a waiting
niagara

i followed a thought
like i was breaking down
the shifting images of pins
and needles on a cramping poet's
hand between daylight's wonder
and evening's fulfillment.
pretty soon i will perhaps know
the going rate of innocence
as poets die aborning; their poetry,
if it was ever there,
but fodder for a multitude of thieves
whose visions are dead past
living

ray
( gee...some thoughts are more "bursting" than
  others...i don't know if there's coherence here...
i do tend to lose myself sometimes... )

Oh no you don't!
You didn't lose yourself at all.
You followed your thoughts and they
were all so good to read.
I'm a master at second guessing myself
so I know the feeling~

i followed a thought
like i was a song always
at the threshhold of its
singing, looking for
the sweetest coda, yet
also like i was perched on
a leaf barreling towards
the embracing roar of a waiting
niagara

I've no trouble following that all,
your thoughts are most enjoyable.

I could have copied the whole poem
but I like this part the very best....
made me hear the wail of a sax, and I love that
