Thoughts Wasted

Sometimes, my feelings
are so bottled up
that they spill over
at the slightest
thoughts of you.

I touch a piece of clothing,
remembering it's fit,
and the you beneath.

My eyes gloss over,
tracing the memory
of my gift to you,
shelved for my view alone.

My memories
evolve around you.
Words, poems, places,
moments shared,
thought wasted by one
but never by me.

I have two days to think,
to either run away from
or accept all...
that what has happened,
was meant to be.

Silently, I cry tears of loss.
In the distance, I hear the past,
feeling alone and stranded
in an unfamiliar world,
again condemned to drift off
into darkness without you.

Was my whole life a mistake?
Should I have reached out to you
to ask forgiveness, or to forgive?
Was there ever a second chance?
The silence answers.

My body teases me
into believing that
the voices I hear in the dark
are yours.
That the touches felt
are not just those
trapped in my mind.

Some day I know
we will meet again
and for me,
the desire will be only
to see in the eyes,
the return of a softness,
that I believe
is the real you.

"For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart.
It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul."
(J.Garland)

There was a palpable longing in this. I ached as I read it. Life is full of regrets and this is one of the most bitter ones.

I could feel your pain Maureen, your questioning, your sense of loss.Love should never be thrown away callously if it can be redeemed, nor can it be one-sided. Your heart knows dear friend, listen to it!!!

Thank you for posting this gem of a poem, Maureen.  It sums up, almost exactly how I felt for a few months after my first husband died.(((lots of hugs)))

Very painful feelings in this one Maureen.
You have expressed those feelings very well to the reader.  Well done.

Thoughts, memories of lost love, can be such a heavy burden to carry.  You captured that feeling all to well in this write.  Well done.
