MAULED

“I’m just popping out, you guys all right?
Don’t forget karate, its Monday night”

“Go on mum we’ll be ok
Just five more minutes and we leave anyway”

They walked the landing, along to the stairs
Looked down to be faced with menacing stares
They were normally friendly they would normally play
For that moment of thought one would dearly pay
In a flash one was on him, it flew up the stairs
It had sighted its prey, the boys flesh it tears
The fear had him routed, a lamb to the slaughter
He had to do something, he new that he oughter
The banister he jumped, to find an escape
He ran for the door, but it was to late
To the floor they dragged him, kicking and screaming
The door handle in front, callously gleaming
He fought to his feet, now weak and in pain
Got out of the door, but they got him again
The dogs were a frenzy, no reason no rhyme
Just child on the menu, and this child was mine
The other child cowering, frozen by fear
Tried to think why, the pets he held dear
Could do such a thing, to some one they knew
No provocation, they just looked up and flew
For his friend, my son, Salvation was found
A very brave lady came running around
The dogs were then stopped with the owners’ appearance
It took real strength and perseverance
She helped him to safety, all tear stained and battered
No fear for her self, nothing else mattered
They cleaned up his wounds and gave me a call
In a flash we were down there, to the shock of it all
Quickly to hospital, for medical attention
Just thanking the lord for his intervention
That night those dogs paid for their horrible crime
With that, the owners wasted no time
They went from a protector, to savage beast
Because of that change, they’re now deceased
In time the outer wounds will heal, the scars may disappear
But in his mind that day will stay, that memory, that fear
The fear to walk safe down a street or round a friends to play
The fear of going anywhere a dog might pass his way

Wow! What a terrible thing to happen, especially to a child. Thank God your son is all right! Very powerful poem here--it makes you realize the danger anyone could be placed in at any time. Nicely done akela.

And this continues to happen...my heart goes out to your son for his pain and the fear that will walk his lifetime with him...I also send a hug of compassion for the parents for they will be holding their son's hand on that walk !!!

Welcome. What a horrible thing for anyone to experience. I hope this does not leave permanent emotional scars, on either boy. When animals do this unexpectedly, the owner has only one choice, and that is to put their beloved pet down. A sad ending for all.
