Recorded in Sand

An ease of light; if only for a moment,
shade; a respite from the bright stark
reflecting off the temple stone.
The ground, more dust than sand,
must have felt like linen though all could see
it was but the remains of the construction
eternally in progress. The commotion began
in a far wing but swirled towards him,
harsh and sudden. Then all was hushed
as components of the Sanhedrin
crushed themselves into a wall
of accusation.
"Moses says!" and with those words
the Law's weight,
accumulated throughout their history
struck the woman repeatedly
till her guilt scrambled like a panicked roach
caught in the illumination
of a lightning stroke at midnight.
Silence. "Trapped as well," or so they thought
as they marveled at the dilemma
to which, at last, they had finally brought him.
The adulteress meant nothing.
But to repudiate the Law, with its sentence of death
(though not enforced for centuries)
was unthinkable. And yet,
had he not these last three years,
from Tyre and Sidon in the north
to the Negev in the south,
fed the starving crowds
forgiveness?
What now?
The silence deepened. And with it
weariness. "Let he be first....."
comes down to us admist the other
soft, thudding pronouncements that turn us back begrudgingly. But what of this?
If we had stayed while most disbursed;
for us as well if his voice kissed
away the salt that pained our tears,
would we then see his finger trace
the record of our lives
in sand?

Sunshine...you are too kind, as always.

Noah....such a sweetheart...which is an adjective close to the heart of Marine Corps Drill Instructors. Interloper will attest to that. Thank you for your kind words.

Nancy....what can I say. It's nice to be missed.

Interloper...What was it they use to say: "Are you trying to make another platoon, ARE YOU?" Semper Fi.

Martie.......Thank you.....Hugs.

Sadly it is the nature of man to walk away from self-examination. To linger would be to face what is too painful to acknowledge...our own humantiy. Nicely done!
