the neon whispers
that anything goes
in the darkness

nine hundred numbers
in headphones
whisper their best deals

                                 no charge to the listening man
                                 if he is a statue
                                 with hard thighs

the  lap dancer
counts the change
by denomination in front pockets

tells the dates and heads
or tails with no hands
she says she works for free

                               no charge to the sitting man
                               if he is a statue
                               with hard thighs

my mind drifts to magnolia places
you hold my arm there
as we carry our quiet shoes

and walk with bare feet
that make maybe prints
in tomorrow thought sand

                                you place a whisper kiss
                                on an attentive cheek
                                statue thighs grow soft
