The Page that Waited

The mother recognized,
perhaps, sensing
in the trace of her young
Daughter’s long, slender fingertips,

The magic that lay beneath this
translucent skin, beneath these
pink fingernails, the unexplained,
that which was simply waiting
in her child, the needs and
desires she would suffer,
all waiting in her to explore the
Land of Lexis,
the Zeniths of Astroplanes,
and those Oceanic Depths of all
that had come before her,

Mysteries and unknowns
that would beckon her
down so many roads…

So, for her daughter, the mother
designed a symbol
on cream-white, thick
parchment, leaving behind
a bond that would integrate the
young woman’s talents
of what was
to come, when she was
of a proper age

Oftentimes, the daughter would
stroke the paper, smoothing it out,
caressing it,
as if a life lay before her
waiting for her blood, her
ink of life to give

Her poetry …

The young woman matured, life
having its way with her,
as there were times that
by her touch, all would
be right, and at times, she would
rage at magnified injustices that
befell her, while all the time
her steps had taken her
willingly down the road that she
would later vent upon.

During those times
she would stroke those
cream-white sheets of parchment,
while feeling as if she
had let her mother down,
for she had yet to pen

Her poetry…

Little yellow sheets with blue
stripes, or the cleaner side of brown-
paper bags would grab
at her pen strokes,
capturing them, demarking
and delineating
her fears and tremors,
her joys and frustrations,
while she waited for

Her poetry…

Some days these feelings would
swell to a heightened point of
making her feel faint, and she
would choke on the
thought of life running through her,
as she watched her
hands age, still not
quite ready to
set her blood’s ink of thought
to the cream-white parchment
of her mother’s gift,
which was simply waiting
to bond with her life in

Her poetry…

Too soon, far too soon,
her mirrors told her
that all remained in her shell
was the voice of experience ~

she had gone past
the time of roses in her
cheeks, and sunbeams in
once-fair hair;

She had trespassed into the land
of ages, and wondered where
the Land of Lexis lay,
where Zeniths of Astroplanes
might lead,
how deep Oceanic Depths
might have been, in

Her poetry…

For all in that she had promised
herself “soon”, she realized
that surrounding her were
the snippets of life

In crinkled sheets of yellowed
paper, and on the backs of
brown paper bags,
in the smiles of her children’s
children,
and in the ring of the chimes
from the laughter
of them…

It was then she knew, and no longer
raged at the
“S” of “soon,” but applied it,
adhering it well to her “age”

For she finally understood,
when gazing upon the cream white
paper before her, the parchment
that waited for her to bond with it,

Why her mother had planned it
to be lightly embossed with an “S”
that she might be blessed
with sagacious wisdom
before coming to pen…

Her poetry.

In Honor of Ron Carnell,
and his infinite wisdom
in knowing that all good
things come Soon...

Oh, Karilea--it matters not what the parchment..rich and rare, or ragged..it is the heart that comes from the poet in the way she sees, not on what she writes.  Absolutely adored this poem!
