Tangerine

Breathe, he said,
as his long fingers
dug into the skin and pulled.

He placed the palm of his hand
against my cheek
and I breathed February.

His hand is too big, I thought,
for the tender pile of peel
that grew on the grass
where we sat with the sun
giving reverence to a tree.

Close your eyes, he said,
and I felt the air change
and grow dense with memory.

How melted is time
that could keep small girl hands
and give them to the air
still sticky and fragrant with love
after all these years, I thought,
as I opened my mouth and he placed my memory there
to share.

and only you could come up with this phrase
How melted is time
heart-hugs sweets...and yes...breathe

Oh Martie...sometimes I just don't know what to say. You stun me wordless. You captured a moment in time that captured a moment in time...like infinity mirrors...sigh

How melted is time

Is there a more perfect way to describe memories??? This joins a long list of Martie-lines that I know on first reading I'll never forget. *S* Beautiful poem, Martie... the sweet tang of citrus now drifts through my office. *S*
