Listening to every heart

Before the War Was Over…

The fiddle plays sweet night, my dear
As twilight purples my thoughts
Long cries the whippoorwill, my love,
As jasmine’s fragrance is wrought

‘neath the valley’s shadows, love
‘neath the slumbering hills
‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

The sun shall rise tomorrow, dear
With purpose shall stream forth
Which side shall you fight for, my love?
The South, or with the North?

‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
‘neath the slumbering hills
‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

We stand upon the battle line
Our brothers straddle each
Could greater sacrifice be ours,
Than entering into this breach?

‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
‘neath the slumbering hills
‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

I shall come back to you, my love,
By foot or by my own horse
I shall come straight back to you,
From the south or from the north

‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
‘neath the slumbering hills
‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

Do not cry for me, my love,
I must leave for blue or gray
One side needs to win my love,
Which is right? I cannot say…

‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
‘neath the slumbering hills
‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

A decision must be made, my dear,
Then I must stride on forth,
Shall I wear the blue, or gray?
My heart lies south, my mind is north…

‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
‘neath the slumbering hills
‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

Kiss me once again my dear
Fulfill me with your dreams,
Tarry me no longer, dear,
I must heed a warrior’s scheme

For ‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
Then ‘neath the slumbering hills
Seek me ‘neath the midnight moon, my love,
That our tomorrows be fulfilled…

Kari darling sister of my heart I really love this poem it is UTTERLY utterly fabulous.
Yes I know I always say that but then you always write to utter perfection. I wouldn’t have to say it was absolutely perfect if you didn’t always write so well would I? No exactly

Do not cry for me, my love,
I must leave for blue or gray
One side needs to win my love,
Which is right? I cannot say…

‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
‘neath the slumbering hills
‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

A decision must be made, my dear,
Then I must stride on forth,
Shall I wear the blue, or gray?
My heart lies south, my mind is north…

This is truly perfection, the flow the line the rhyme wonderful work darling girl wonderful

Love and warm stuff
As always

And another masterpiece comes forth for our
eyes to read..our hearts to feel and our
souls to covet...

Sunshine,

This is such an well-written poem that well expresses the moral turmoil of any war.  What is right?  Thank you for sharing this.

As I read your incredible words, I could hear the faint strains of "The Cruel War" echoing through my mind... Regardless of which side called his name, the separation's pain is the same. *S* This is beautiful, Sunshine... wonderfully written.

powerfully done my friend. . . the sad strains of the ballad echo through the halls here. . . as I hear the one last voice wonder. . . and the other voice echoing in sadness. . .

superb. . .
