Withal enough of deep frostbitten woe.
Embanked like hoary fortress to dismay
Emerging marmot's peek from snowy quay,
From slumber's wrest by sleightly vernal show.
As winds of February gust and blow,
Now's just the time to will the sun away;
For Phil the Punxsatawney skies all gray,
To expiate the wanton frigid snow.

Once bundled from hibernal sleep aground,
The groundhog hesitantly peers around.
His languid eyes sole harbinger of spring,
Deem whether six ensuing weeks shall bring
The rest of winter's icy throes replete…
Unless his frightful shadow spawns retreat!!

Oops I understand he saw his shadow.  Poor guy, pulled out of sleep for that.  Cute poetry.  Joyce

Happy Groundhog Day, Nan...Its official now....Phil saw his shadow, so I guess we're stuck with 6 more weeks of winter.
Great poem though!

Oh, I thought his name was Pete, well I guess it is Phil. I had forgotten since I never watch it. Anyway, you took a subject I'm not fond of and made it into a sonnet that I love. I am in awe of your writing

Well for goodness sake!  To write a sonnet is one thing, and to do it with excellence is another, but to do a cute one, that I laughed all the way through is quite unfair for the current workshop and you don't get a gold star for doing your homework as you are the teacher, na na na na nah!   Nan, this was priceless.

Thank you my kind friends for reading and enjoying Phil's brief emergence from his sleepy underground slumber... He did see his shadow, I fear... He did promise to come back in six weeks though...
