This is the first poem I had written in a very long time.  I wrote it right after my first husband's funeral.  When he was dying, I asked him to send me a sign that he was okay and that there really was an afterlife.  During his burial...a beautiful Swallowtail butterfly flew out of his grave, right before the coffin was lowered.  I have always considered this to be a sign from him

Butterfly

Free of your earthly body now...you fly
unshackled from suffering
released from your pain
recalling your life
you lived not in vain

the countless lives you've touched
those who love you so much
you can see us all now as you fly above
and we still feel your kindness
your gentleness
and your love

high above, you soar on golden wings
unencumbered now of earthly things
infinite knowledge, bequethed to you
from this most lofty ethereal view

from here, high above...at last you can see
the future that was once
but now, will never be
your beautiful spirit
has finally been set free

Madame Chipmunk... This is beautiful. Even though it seems a sad occasion influenced it, the freedom of it is wonderful.

After reading it again, some of the verses look a little butterfly-shaped...

Lyra, this one touched me deep inside, and I believe that butterfly was no ordinary butterfly. While we were sprinkling a friend's ashes on Meditation Mount (Ojai,CA), an eagle flew overhead. I knew she was OK, and on her way. Thank you for sharing this intensely personal moment.

How often I wish that I knew the whole story behind a sorrowful or particularly moving writing.  The signs of miracles are abundant!   Thoughtfully tugs at anyone who lost a loved one.

Lyra, I have goose bumps. I never asked for a sign but one day shortly after my son died,I was sitting on the porch swing and a gorgeous butterfly landed on my shoulder, I couldnt move, from there it went on my knee and stayed for a long time...I always wondered. This is so heart warming, I am sure that yours was a sign. How uplifting that had to be on that awful day for you. Wonderful poem. floria

Larry...thanks so much for your reply, this poem is very special to me.  It was the very first one I wrote after a very long literary dry spell.

Noah...thank you, I'm glad you like it...it has been through several revisions.  The first version was so unbelievably amateurish, but it came right from my aching heart.

Bec...Thanks for replying, and you are right...after you said that, I looked at it again and with a few modifications, I could probably make it look just like a butterfly, but it might ruin the wording of the poem...but there are definitely butterfly shapes in there.......how eerie!

Newell...thanks for reading and replying.  I think you are right.  It was quite an amazing signal...the butterfly is the symbol of the passage from this life to the next.  Amazingly, at my son's funeral which was 14 months later, we saw 2 butterflies fly over his grave after the ceremony.  I have never written a poem about that...maybe I will one day.

Kacy... I am sure that the eagle was a sign from your friend, and that the butterfly was a sign for me also...Now, I always watch for butterflies.

PB4S.....Thanks for your reply, I think miracles are all around us, all we have to do is keep our eyes open for them.

Roniece...thanks for replying, and I do believe that he will always be watching over me...I think that he is responsible for my meeting my present husband.

Juanita...thanks my dear friend. I just have to keep believing that he is somewhere, praying for me.

Victoria...thank you for replying...I appreciate your very nice comments.

Keth..."on butterfly wings he came back" thanks so much for that poetic reply

Floria...Thats so interesting that you had a similar experience...it just had to be George, letting you know that he was okay.

ethome...thanks so much for taking the time to read this and to reply to it.

amigo...I believe you are right.  We were extremely close, especially at the end when he was so sick and I was his caregiver thanks for commenting.

Lyra...sometimes life deals us a hand that
requires us to draw three cards....You have
gotten a royal flush...  Your beautiful
words speak so well of your trials,
and your conquests...

Thanks Stevie...I am almost positive that he sent David to me.  They have the same color eyes...which is an unusual shade of greenish blue, and both are lefties ( its seems that I only marry lefties)
I think my Dad might have also been part of this match, because his name was David also...and the day we first met was the anniversary of David's mother's death...so I think she was part of it also.
I think miracles are everywhere and that our lost loved ones do speak to us...we just have to open our eyes and see and open our ears and listen.
