The old man sits on the porch in his rocking chair.
To look at him you wouldn`t think he had a care.

Older people are so very special you know.
This old man was especially so.

He had been through wars and survied.
He was married sixty years when God took his wife.

His children come to visit about once a year.
They haven`t any time for this man so dear.

He understands they have a life of their own.
They have no time for him now that they`re grown.

The old man justs sits there and rocks.
Every now and then he will look at the clock.

He knows he has been very blessed.
He hopes when his time comes he`ll pass God`s test.

Then an angel says its time to go.
The smile on his face was a glorious glow.

His chair stopped rocking and everything was quiet.
In his heart he knew everything was alright.

The angel took his hand and led him away.
To his wife in heaven where they now stay.

On the day of his funeral his children all shedded tears.
For their father they only came to see once a year.

sad indeed..This makes me realize that I should go pay a visit to my grandpa because he is 80 years old and might pass on soon.

*sigh* how very sad this world has become that love of family seems to be just a once a year kind of thing...this poem made me weep for him and all the lonely years yet rejoice that he is now eternally with the one he loves. **big hugs**

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Juantia it is so so sad how true this is.. It inspires me to post one I wrote when I went to visit my mom who is in an alzheimers home. I can't stand seeing the ones who stare hoping you are coming for them.. I go twice a week, and I get more out of it from seeing my mom than she does..she doesnt know me anymore,,It is sad..great write with very human qualities. floria

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Juanita, this is sooooooooo heartbreaking, it breaks my heart to see families detached from each other and then when our elders pass on the tears and shame that follow! (big hugggssssss) Every week now I pay a visit to the Christian Living Center next to my school and meet all the elderly there to keep them welcomed and to help out with the meals and arts and crafts and Corn Crop dances children put on and other activities just because I respect them so much and they deserve so much love and company! (wipes tears) God Bless You, sweet friend, this is soooooooo sad but beautiful, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Juanita, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

North Carolina Girl - I read this and can't find words to express how it touched me. If you have a kleenex I could use one for this cinder in my eye...

I know this is supposed to be a sad poem, and it is, for all those children who never think that time is short...but for me, it made me glad that I was holding my father's hand as he slipped upward...

precious thoughts here Juanita, tonight I think I wrote on a similar theme but chose the clothes that my older relatives would make and they have passed on too, sad to say!

Very, very beautiful. What a glorious story of a happy old man patiently waiting to meet his creator on graduation day remembering his finest memories. Well done, sir, well done. And to you, Juanita. Well done, sweet poet, well done.

well written Juanita, isn't it sad that people just continue with their busy life, failing to think that their turn to occupy the rocking chair is not far off....
