Lady Elizabeth's Despair (monologue)

"What has he done, he asks? Surely, he knows!
Can one maintain true love without the kiss?
Can love be bought with baubles and trinkets?
Material pleasures are not so loving!
Ribbons of silk and jewels aplenty
can caress my skin, yet he cares not to!
Not in the sacramental, wedded way...
How can mere things fulfill my soul's longing?
I cannot play mistress without the hope
of becoming a respectable wife!
I despise him and myself much more so!
He does not understand the way of love
and I do not know how else to paint it!
More fool I to think he'd learn the lesson.
Oh, wretched hearts be damned forever more!
His and mine, our hearts are made for breaking.
As he tore mine asunder, I did his.
Together, we murdered our happiness.
Apart, may we do penence for our sin."
