Opportunity Knocked

I lost my opportunity
"Before" it could be found,
It seems the harder that it knocked …
The less I heard that sound.

It started faintly rapping
At my door the other day;
But I was far too busy,
And my mind began to stray.

Relentlessly it pounded …
Constant beating at my door;
But my attention drifted …
It was easy to ignore.

Engrossed in all my chaos,
I tuned out the rhythmic drone,
Submerged in deadlines, fear and doubt …
The only life I'd known.

I focused on my tasks at hand,
Ignored the tap-tap-taps,
I only recognized it stopped
When suddenly …. it lapsed!

I waited - total silence
Seemed to permeate the room;
I felt myself begin to panic …
Felt a sense of doom!

I dropped what I was doing,
"Please don't leave!" I tried to roar;
I couldn't get there fast enough …
I flew across that floor!

I flung open the door and yelled,
"Don't go!" through humbled plea,
But there was nothing waiting there …
It vanished … magically.

Now here I sit in silence,
With my deadlines of the day …
A vague impression that my
Very future ran away.

I lost my chance - it disappeared,
A fate I can't erase …
I missed my opportunity …
It left without a trace.

Well, Kit, my girl, you really missed
A golden opportunity.
Guess who was knocking at your door?
That's right, girl....it was me!!!

I drove until my car broke down
For thirty hours or more
Then walked until my shoes gave out
And poor feet got too sore.

I hitched a ride in Illinois
One of those trucker rigs
And  had to sit back with his load
Of Mississippi pigs!

They wouldn't let me cross the border
Cause I smelled so bad
So I crawled under barbed wire
Scratched myself up....ain't that sad?

I smelled bad and my pants were ripped
My swollen feet were sore
But finally my trek was done..
I showed up at your door!!

I've worshipped you so very much
To me you're such a winner!
I only came to ask you if
Perhaps we could have dinner.

I knocked one time, then knocked again
I stood but no one came
I knocked again then yet once more
Results were still the same.

My strength was almost gone by then
I fell down to my knees.
I felt that half of Canada
Could hear my woeful pleas.

But it was all to no avail
No miracle came true
So now I'm headed back without
One single look at you.

The doctor says I'll walk again
Though I may limp a bit
And I can't look at bacon
Without going into fits

But, hey! That's life. That's how it goes
It was a chance I had.
I hope your day is wonderful
And please don't feel bad...

ROFL ....

Oh .. woe is me, I SURE screwed up!
I can't believe it's true!!!
At my front door ... the knocking that I heard
Was really you???

Please turn around ... right now, OK?
And come on back to me ...
I'll leave the front door open,
Heck ... I'll throw away my key!!!

I'll wait upon the front porch step,
No need to knock and wait ...
I can't believe I missed my chance!
I can't believe my fate!!!

Oh boy ... I have to fix this mess,
I blew it royally,
Now if you can't come knock again ...
I guess it's up to me!

I'll hop into my beat up Ford,
And head on down to you ...
I figure it should take me
Just a day or so to do!

So promise me, you'll listen close,
And when you hear a knock ...
It should be me, sweet poet friend,
Around 'bout nine o'clock!

I'll bring a first aid kit,
Some soap and water (pork will stay)
Just listen for a tap-tap-tap ...
I'm heading right your way!

What’s the old saying…”as one door closes, another opens”. There will be other opportunities rapping at your door…but this time…ANSWER!!! And I’m lmao at Balladeers reply, and yours to him. What a good chuckle you’ve both sent me off to bed with.

Well, I usually sleep through most of the day so I'm pretty likely to miss alot of opportunities.  But today, it's almost 60 degrees here, sunny and I'm up before noon...think I'll go out and look for some, just in case they don't get around to my door!
