Running From My Heart

500 miles behind me and I’m following that white line
Don’t know where I’m going but wherever will be just fine
Putting distance between me and my grieving, broken heart
Even though I’m in love with her our ways did have to part

Just one more tank of gas and I’m running from my heart
Knowing that my hopes and dreams were left back at the start
I’m following that center line, let it take me from my pain
Wipers scrape away my thoughts as I push on through the rain

To love me is a hurtful song , broken many hearts before
How can it be this time that it’s my heart hurting more
I could never resist temptation, been my problem all along
So many women have I had and as many I’ve done wrong

Just one more tank of gas and I’m running from my heart
Knowing that my hopes and dreams were left back at the start
I’m running away this time, to save her from more pain
Of women’s charms my will is weak, of lust I can’t refrain

I see her in the rear-view mirror and again tears begin to swell
Such love in my heart for her that I just couldn’t tell
It has to be this way now, in the future she will see
The best love I can give her is in keeping her from me

Just one more tank of gas and I’m running from my heart
Knowing that my hopes and dreams were left back at the start
My true destiny is loneliness and despair, my only friend
I know it’s waiting up ahead, just around the next bend

600 miles behind me and I’m still following that white line
Don’t know where I’m going but wherever will be just fine
Putting distance between her and my grieving broken heart
My love for her’s the reason that we really had to part

Morning breeze brings flowered scents reminding me of her
As memories, past my watering eyes become a melted blur
Doing 100 miles an hour, still can’t leave her smile behind
No matter how I try to hide, her image still fills my mind

Just one more tank of gas and I’m running from my heart
Knowing that my hopes and dreams were left back at the start
The only way to save her grief is to live this lonely life
Pushing past the mountains, putting barrier to my strife

700 miles behind me and I’m still following that white line
Don’t know where I’m going but wherever will be just fine
Just one more tank of gas and I’m running from my heart
Knowing that my hopes and dreams were left back at the start

Rolling cross the flatlands now, the clouds all wear your face
I don’t know why I’m running cause I just can’t win this race
My heart is 700 miles behind and I’m going the wrong way
Don’t know what I’m doing, no this game I just can’t play

Just one more tank of gas I’ll be running towards my heart
Knowing that my hopes and dreams are waiting at the start
That white line has a meaning now, it wears a happy smile
Helping me to keep on track, I’m counting down the miles

600 miles still lay ahead and I’m following that white line
I know now where I’m going and that all will be just fine
It took her smile and gentle heart to break this will of mine
The rain in life has ended now, the sun’s begun to shine

The radio plays songs of love that are echoed by my soul
Anxious now to be by her side and feel her arms console
This time it will be different, I’ve found my lifelong mate
Wheels are turning faster now, I’m racing towards my fate

Just one more tank of gas andI’m running towards my heart
Knowing that my hopes and dreams are waiting at my start
The winds are behind me and I’m doing the greatest time
I didn’t notice the mountains nor the straining of the climb

I’ll be there in time for evening with romance in my plea
I’m hoping that her waiting arms will set my spirits free
Careening round the corners in my rapid slope descent
Knowing that the love we share is surely heaven sent

300 miles still lay ahead and I’m racing that white line
I know now where I’m going and that all will be just fine
Your vision in my mirror has now moved to road ahead
It lights my way to happiness as towards her I am led

My past days of sin are over now, I’m ready set to settle down
I’ll live my life in love with you and never make you frown
You said that past will remain the past and we will build anew
This you’ll not regret my love, I’ll share my soul with you

10 miles still lay ahead and I’m racing that white line
I know now where I’m going and that all will be just fine
The church steeple is in view as I call you on my cell
Meet me at the chapel my dear there’s much I have to tell

I was a fool for leaving you, I’m back for good this time
Will you consent to be my wife and let the church bells chime
I’ll be your friend your lover, I will cherish you till the end
We’ll walk through life side by side, my love our souls will mend

It took only a second before her reply came to my ear
A voice as soft as velvet and an answer that was clear
Choking back my tears of joy as I whispered her a kiss
And this I promise you my love, a life of future bliss

Just one more mile to go I’m speeding towards my heart
Knowing that my hopes and dreams are all about to start
1400 miles I’ve driven, just been following that white line
Bringing me back to the love that will forever now be mine

Brian this is an excellent read! Well done, well done! I love how it all came full circle and ended happily! This would make a lovely song, it has such a nice flow I'm sure it would be easy to put to music!

I'm a firm believer that any place worth going often takes more time than we planned on.  You really put the miles on here.

I enjoyed this!

Quite a ballad with a wonderfully happy ending. About 600 miles from your heart, on the way out, my thoughts were..."Have you tried therapy?" because your love sounds really powerful, maybe you should let it happen. Hehehehehe, then you did let it happen.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Brian, it just could be the truck driver's song-of-the-year. Not that you would have to be driving 18 wheels to follow the lines in this song. It is a wonderful full-circle love ballad, with great refrain, and a delightful, happy ending.  Now, whose voice do you hear on the demo CD? Hmmm.

Yup!  Sure sounds like a new country song to me...perhaps by Lonestar?  Where were you travelling on....the 401 or the QEW? LOL...that's a lot of miles...you could have driven all the way down here and back.
I love happy endings!  Good write!

Hello Brian
What a wonderful story and such a beautiful ending.  I felt myself travelling that long white line with you, so vivid were your descriptions and I'm sure this would make a wonderful song!  Take care my friend.....Sue
