A crust of ancient stale bread
it peals and crumbles on lonely laps;
hushed forms, huddled in ruins, with mouths agape
seek nuclear company in hollowed homesteads
and collect radioactive fruit.

Pick the fallout ticks off unwary backs
beware of carefully dressed neatly pressed slacks;
in time, hoots will call the hour of dawn
silent night wings will fly to meet their pawns...

Eat of the crust that crumbles hither
and peel the gamma rayed fruit now bitter;
holocausts surround microwave ovens
aprons used to cover clothes, now cover mouths.

A lecherous finger pains, there's no cure
knowledge passed through centuries is obscure;
the rat, successful in his underworld succeeds
ivory tower inventors of latent discoveries are peeved.

Drink of the cup that carries his blood
wear the crown of thorns that prick the skin
dear child of the gospel, where have you been?
Eat of the crust that crumbles, it is healthier
for the soul than leavened bread
for the mind to guard bitter homesteads.
