(in memory of my friend Pat, who took her final earth breath in Feb.6, 2001....reposted from Jan. 16, 01)

A Part of You in Me

You have been my friend
for thirty years,
and now you say it’s time
to go across time’s eternity,
lost except to memory
and withered sweet decay.

For a moment take me with you
to that place of grace,
part the curtain and let me see
your angel wings in motion glazed
with the laughter you have made.

The sound you breathe
is filled with finality
yet holds such tenderness
that I feel tears tremble.

I will keep your laugh
and hold it safe
in black mantilla lace
in a drawer that love opens.

Then your dark frailty
will not find weeping
as time’s precious minutes
in daring tick you out,
but will find a part of you
forever in the lasting of me.

Martie, this is so tender and loving, and a wonderful tribute to your friend. This is especially beautiful:

Martie, Sweet Poetess, you have touched my heart with this one. You were blessed to have had a friend such as this, and she you. Chris

and sorrowful.  To have a friend like that was indeed a
