Why are we here, are we born just to die?
What comes before, what comes after?
What's the truth, what's the lie?

What comes before birth?
Where is the hereafter?
Will we find hate and tears
or love, light and laughter?

Is the death of our life on this earth, the end?
Or is there more life
around some uncharted bend?

These eternal questions
will they ever be answered?
Or is our future in the hands
of a celestial romancer?

What is our purpose in living this life?
with the seasons
come reasons
and purpose for strife

maybe our next lives will be more fun
when our presence on Earth is over and done
but no one can say, unless they've been there
and so I will end this poem with a prayer

enjoy your life now, make the best of your years
after you're gone, there will be time for tears
all we know for certain, is this life we now live
share your love, share your wealth
give all you can give

Thanks for sharing your beautiful pure and honest thoughts. I believe that we have a few more answers than your poem suggests. But there is no doubt that love is the answer! Christ is spirit, God's Spirit of Love. And all love that dwells in us comes from that source. So let's go for it!

"These eternal questions
will they ever be answered?"

Why do we call them 'eternal' questions I wonder?  Perhaps the answer is in the question.  Then again, I enjoy questions more than answers.

Enjoyed this, and the philosophy in the last stanza.

I don't know how I missed this Madame Chipmunk. great poem that raises many questions. I do believe in life after death with Christ. If I didn't believe that I would never be able to get through my grief. I believe the spirit returns to our Creator.I hope you find your answers one day in your heart. great poem. floria

we have purpose
if as the small stone
we find when walking along the shore
never noticed by anyone but us
but placed there by god
just for us to see

Lyra, this is beautifully written. The poetry is excellent. I wish you had your answers. It's so reassuring to me not to have to wonder. Cheryl

There's so much here.  I'm sure we've all asked ourselves these questions.
This poem is very reflective, gives food for thought.  Lovely expression, Lyra,
makes me wonder sometimes, I wonder "why am I here" then I look
at my children's faces.....and those who know and love me and
I almost feel ashamed because I really know...deep down.

I almost forgot what I was going to write when I saw the 'Hang in there kitty' pic. Very nicely written, Lyra. A philosophical pondering, a good way to begin another day, especially after reading a bit of Nietzsche last night.

Newell, thanks for your reply.  If there are answers, I have not yet found them personally...and I believe that there is a reason that we don't know those answers. If we knew them...we might live our lives differently and possibly not as well as we really do live them.
I understand why you believe as you do, but I am Jewish and we do not accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah...although, I personally, think that he was a very great prophet and teacher.

Krawdad...thanks for reading...and yes the questions are eternal because I don't think we ever know the answers until it is too late to tell anyone what they are.

Floria...thanks for your reply. I agree with you about the spirit returning to the creator.  I think that after we die, our souls become a part of heaven or God...however, as a Jewish person...I don't believe that Jesus Christ is God...but he was a great great man...please see my response to Newell (above)

OWG, thanks for reading and replying to my poem...we are all just a tiny part of a very large whole.

Cheryl...thanks for wishing I had my answers...I wish I could have your faith.

Sy...I would tend to agree with you on that one...about the God of Change...but what type of coins do you mean?
I hope you don't mean the God of dollars.

Kay...thanks for your reply...I wish I could write a poem about the answers for you, but I must confess that I don't know them.

Juanita...thanks for your thoughts and I hope you are are right.

Kacy and Peaches...thanks so much for replying to my poem...
We never know what comes after this life and we also never know how long our lives are going to last...we are never guaranteed a tomorrow and so we should live for the present.

(big hugggsssssss) Someday we'll know when the time is right, and I believe with all my heart there is a heaven between us that we will find when our time is up, but until then, may we all rejoice life and share our love and play and believe in ourselves! (kiss on cheek) We all love you so much, sweet friend, this is deep and beautiful! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Madame Chipmunk - Whatever each one of us believes in doesn't really matter much if we are uncaring and thoughtless people. We must be grateful for each day and be good to each other. Enjoyed. Chris

Dear Lyra,
Read your poem again. Still like it. But, I never have really understood the question. God put us on earth for the pleasure of our company. The purpose of life is to enjoy it as much as possible, and try to make it better for the other people around us. If there is a hereafter, and I can't think why there wouldn't be, it will be filled with new adventures. When things go wrong on earth it's because we're flawed. But perfection is boring, so we should be grateful for flaws and work around and through them. How's that for philosophy101?

Nan

Perfection is indeed boring, Nan...and you get an A+ in philosophy!
I sure hope that there is a hereafter and that its a fun place where we get to visit with our dear departed family members.
Thanks for the reply.

Yup Kacy, that's our Lyra!
