Last Moments

Vision blurring, I’m feeling faint.
Sirens pierce the chilled night air
with the ominous premonition of urgency.
As I look down on the heap of twisted,
tortured metal and plastic that was once
a luxurious vessel of transport. It’s fluids spilling,
painting abstracts in their quest for level ground
onlookers gape and stare in awe and shock
Mumbling and groaning their despair yet
unable to avert their gaze or give privacy to the
last few seconds of this soul’s earthly presence
Paramedics push their way through and firemen pull
and cut away the last remaining barriers to prying eyes
only to expose more of me to the multitude of ghouls
anxious to see but unable to bare the visions that
unfold. Be gone!!Leave me privy to my last few moments
on this mortal plane. Have I not given you enough
of myself in life that now you have to rob me of the privacy
of my lastprayer? Have I not suffered enough
by your hunger and thirst for gossip and idle innuendoes
that you need my final breath also? I try to
hold my head high, proud, defiant to their insult
but get no response from my seeping mangled limbs
I weep and voice my disdain on deaf ears, ignored, defiled
Why should I ask for now that which was denied me in life?
I gave you love and got back rumor, joy and received
heartbreak, life and was denied my own. The pain is
fading now as is the light, I cease to care anymore
for the transgressions afflicted me. I feel warm again,
loved, needed for the first time in oh so very long.
I feel peace. Why do they try so hard to save
that which is already saved. Leave me to
continue this journey. Of all you
have taken of me grant me this. I have at last
found a place of love and peace.
I’ll let no-one stay me this transition.
Of all you have taken from me, I leave you
my love, memories of good deed and caring.
Weep not for me for I am finally free.

My dear Brian,,, I knew instantly the first few lines, I said, this is for Diana. I was and am such an admirer of her strength. Her beauty inside and out and oh how she was hunted down for the almighty dollar. When she died I stayed up all night to watch the news and I cried. I miss her. And I love this tribute to her, It is nice to know she is not forgotten. floria

brian, dear Lady Di, so sweet, I miss her honest smile. Well done. Chris

A very chilling but compassionate write, Brian. You write the way you photograph, with vivid clarity, always focussed sharply on the image you seek to project. I'm always repulsed by the frenzy of the media in their attempt to 'get the picture and the story.'  And you've done an excellent job with such a difficult piece of history. Lady Di would probably be pleased with the respect for privacy you have poignantly requested for a dying soul.

Wonderful Brian.  I would say more but the words can't seem to get past the lump in my throat. Great write with vivid imagery!

Hello Brian
Your words sent shivers down my spine as I recalled that dreadful day when the whole world stopped.  Such a beautiful and gracious woman who never asked for much, other than a normal life which she never got. May she finally be at peace now.
Take care.......Sue

Brian, this is very powerful writing in the first person.  I like the way the form of the poem falls with it centered.  It almost seems to suggest a feminine figure and it accents the poem visually.  A few edits where words are enjambed against each other would make it read easier.

Overall I ditto the comments as to the power of this work to emote and draw emotions from the reader.  Very good handling of  delicate theme.

what an emotional poem.  Right now, I feel I have no
emotions.  A person gets that way after so long,
writing, reading, writing, reading, writing, reading,
but this, I enjoyed.
