Date, Dated, Date It

How often have you been told,
“Never let your memory rely,”
On past things said,
Done, did,
Happenings come and go
So rapidly
Steadily
Drip, drip, then drip away
Moreover, we say
“Remember when?”
Nevertheless, what was the day?

Oh, we might recall the year
Or so,
Remember it was a soft glow,
Or perhaps a bit of rainy day,
Yes, we can recall that
Into the words we prayed
Into black and white
However, we did write
The date?

“Oh, the summer it was hot,”
Back in 1980-ought
“Oh, do you recall,”
How the leaves fell in the fall
But did you note
The time and tide
Or did you think your
Memory would ride
And override all malfunctionings
Of that recall you want
To bring…

It’s not too late,
To stem the tide
Of memory’s failure
Of its seek, and hide…

Oh poet, I do beseech
Do not think this breech
Of my implore
Is cast unexplored…

Date the poem you’ve
Sought to write
So when transferred
From computer to ‘puter,
The date sits tight…

Going though some old photos are ya?.. I never date mine either.. Then I have to put them into some sort of context.. like.. "yeah - that's the year the kids all had chicken pox"... or something similar..

You can make a simply GREAT poem out of anything, Sunny Lady...

How true, Sunshine. I include the date with my copyright stamp, and try to save all versions of each poem. Just my way to  remember the day.

Sunshine,
All too true and something I rarely do, enjoyed. *L*

Most of my stuff is dated, and I'm glad it is. About a month ago, I uncovered quite a few of the first copies of my poems, all handwritten. Not all are dated, but it was so nice to have them again. Excellent poetic advice, Karilea.

God bless America, my home sweet home.

Yep! That's what we need to do to be organized and 'up-to-date.'

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

i date everything. sometimes i wish i didn't. time goes by so quickly. life is so very very short. every moment, a treasure...

you write it well, ms sunshiny-one!

(on a side note, i once had a friend who i guess wanted to be more than a friend and he said to me, "by the time people get to our age, they don't date, they date! the word takes on a whole new meaning"... lol.... oh geez, i've got all the luck to meet up with guys with silver-tongued philosophies!!! hehe... well he tried anyway... rofl... date it!! )
