Each journey leads us somewhere
each has a destination
straight and narrow, roundabout
for business or vacation

mine didn't go as planned
didn't follow the road intended
a major detour changed my course
and I found that road dead-ended

lost and frightened, all by myself
my horizon brimmed with salty tears
I questioned, would I always be alone
I still had so many years

after some time of aimless wandering
burned out thoughts and weary pondering
when familiar music burned my ears
old photos, brought me to quaking tears
with memories, yellowed, but still so near

I knew it was time for my wandering to end
I'd found a new road around the bend
with a fellow traveler, a hand to hold
warmth and comfort when nights grew cold

must change my course
must turn about
begin again
from inside out

to climb a new mountain
and drink from life's fountain
in the valley of desolation
I'd finally found some consolation

our journey together begins anew
our own road, we will follow
my useless map lies crumpled now
my bitter tears, I've swallowed

where this road leads, we don't yet know
to happiness or sorrow
together, we will take it slow
and dream of sweet tomorrows

some roads are smoothly paved
some, under construction
up hills and down
through cities and towns
all part of life's instructions

lives don't always go as planned
they sometimes change direction
east or west
worst or best
take some time for reflection

(big hugggssssss) So well said, sweet friend, life can be filled with highways and byways and it can be clear or rough sailing from here, but as long as we dream sweetly and keep a positive state-of-mind and love, we will find the journey ahead to be promising and happy! (kiss on cheek) Soooooo beautiful, sweet friend, we all love you so much, you are always a delight to us all! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

This reminded of a song by Trisha Yearwood "where your road leads, I will follow"  You have touched on much wisdom in this one, Lyra.  I like.

LongJohn, Noah and Marsha....thanks for your replies.  The poem is about my wonderful husband, David.  I would never leave him by the side of the road.  He is the best thing that has ever happened to me, and we will walk down that road hand in hand, forever...or until the road ends.

Juanita, Kay and Dave...Thanks for your replies.  I think I remember that song, kay...and it is a compliment to have this poem compared to it.
David says that he will keep traveling hand in hand with me, even if I bring my entire wardrobe and all my cosmetics everywhere.
Now...that is a real special man!

Thanks so much, Martie.  I agree with you.
I think we took the road less traveled!

where this road leads, we don't yet know
to happiness or sorrow
together, we will take it slow
and dream of sweet tomorrows

Lyra, i'm not a pessimistic person but i can't help doubting this paragraph..why bother to walk if the road inevitably leads you to sorrow?

i hope you didn't find my response insulting...
