~ a Simple Majesty  ~

bemused, the village held his hand steady
at age of 10 he learned to spoon himself
Steady he was, as he pursued with snail speed
knowledge that children half-his-age had already learned
provoking jaundiced tongues of school children
his patience a gentle giant with deliberate steps

At 15 he held his first girl's hand
and they learned to spoon themselves
instincts took over where books failed
Steady he was, he pursued her pleasure with snail speed
knowledge that men his age didn't want to learn
provoking wagging tongues of school mates
his deliberate steps made him a loving gentle giant

At 20 he played his first hand
on tables usually reserved for forks and spoons
Steady he won, as he followed success with snail speed
a fortune that men half his age had never saved
provoking the envious tongues of the greedy
his fortitude made him an admirable opponent

at 30, he ringed his beloved's hand
she learned to take care of their child, one spoon at a time
steady their bond;  happiness relished each day at snail speed
wisdom in marriage half a word never mastered
provoking envious ah's of the romantically needy
his devotion made him a favorite of angels

at 55 he put aside his poker hand
and gave his daughter his cherished baby spoon
steady he guided his grandchildren who moved with snail speed
matching intellects, once a childlike mind, always one
a man with energy of a man half his age
provoking glees of pleasure in the babies
his complete giving made his daughter proud

at 75 they crossed his hands over his chest
his daughter placing the silver spoon with him
steady, they filed in to pay tearful goodbyes with snail speed
remorse brimming in a town twice its original size
provoking sighs of grief in those who knew this simple man
his gift of love to all made a giant world
a little smaller

This is such a sadly sweet poem. The tale of a man whose life mean more than just the spoon - it's the little things that define us.

Noah, i have admired your warmness from afar for a long time.  Your benevolence towards others is admirable.  Thank you for your words.

Hero's are found sometimes in the most unlikely corners.  We search for superstars in sports, bravery in war, but the true heroes are those whose spirit inspires others, enriches their lives.  Starttime, your reply touches me.  awwwww  *smiles*
thankx  JkF

Strrbux, so pleased that you enjoyed such humble of words.  Was compelled to write something of the generous spirit of man in simple terms.

*smiling at Poet deVine*  You picked at the essence of the passing along of the spirit, as i hoped it would be perceived.  Simply a metaphor for such a giving heart that the simple-minded give us without a thought for themselves.  Thank you so much for reading and understanding.  JkF
