The Metal Soldiers

Within their boxes, long and thin,
replacements, bright with paint
including the last minute touch-up
applied, like rouge, from the brush tips
of manufacturers who, these many years,
have made them look effeminate
with rosy cheeks (though now that I mention it,
perhaps it was to capture youth
that from their palette craftsmen took
a dab of "blush", a touch of "kiss").
At any rate,
they packed them up and shipped them off
to foreign lands. See, just there,
at the far end of the living room
where the hearth climbs an imaginary mountain;
at its foot, concealed behind the dark, low hills
of my father's shoes they take their positions;
here a gun, there the infantry in line,
for close at hand the carptet runs
brown and open as the plain that retreats from Kandahar.
My, these Britains, such discipline I've rarely seen;
see them form despite the news
that from the The Times tented on my father's chest
drops like a dispatch carrying shock from the front.
I hurry now to send them up,
for rapidly my mother knits
yet another afghan.

Good to read you again, this is quite powerful in context.

Bob--I see them now, in your words a toy is real, and a man, a boy who still dreams.  Again you leave me shaking my head in amazement at your poetry.

This reads well as prose as well.  Your use of the line breaks and some internal devices adds to the quality and add to the descriptions you have here.  Thanks for the read.

You will stand to and explain your absense.  You have been too long gone from your post in direct violation of your 4th General Order "To leave my post only when properly relieved."

Welcome back Gyrene

What a treasure chest you've packed into your poem! I just love the last line. Those afghans can pose such a problem. Cheryl
