This was written for my older son, Eric.  He is the same son for whom I wrote "The Stone"

Always a difficult child
you lived your life in free-style
a mind of unfettered thought
your feelings could never be bought

your IQ went off the scale
but I thought you would end up in jail
anguished days of skipping school
escaping petty, straightjacket rules

but you grew up wonderful, warm
how proud I was of my firstborn
a doctor, you now would have been
if fate hadn't intervened

like a cat, walking close to the edge
you lived life, far out on a ledge
one night, one tiny misstep
and over that ledge, you were swept

to your family, you were so good
and what I'd give now, if only I could
spend with you, just one more day
oh, all the things I'd remember to say

how much I loved you, how handsome you were
your brilliance unrivaled, anywhere
the most profoundly gifted man I knew
your smile turned cloudy skies to blue

but to you, my dear beloved son
now that its over, your life said and done
my heart bleeding pain, tears stinging my eyes
I would never forget to say...good-bye

Oh my gosh...my heart goes out to you.....To lose a child is a terrible thing to have to endure. **big big hugs** I believe you will meet again and then you will have eternity with him.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Some poems you critique.  Some poems you just read and feel and absorb.  This is way beyond critiquing.  It is a window inside and I applaud your courage in writing it and sharing it.  Thank you.

Thanks so much for the hugs, Kit.  It has been a year and a half and I still expect him to come walking through the door with his messy hair and crooked smile.

Lyra,
The heart break of life...death. It should never happen to our children first. But those geniuses are indeed hard to harness but wonderful to love. I only hope that writing these bless you as much as they have me. Thank you...thank you. So much.

Thanks so much Larry, we all want our kids to be geniuses, but you are right...they are very hard to harness.  Eric had a lot of trouble relating to people who weren't as smart as he was...and that was.......just about everyone.  It was his very intelligence that in the end, caused him to die.

Lyra,
My genius lives on. Turned 31 last October. Still finds ways to scare his dad and live outside the box! I do love hearing about Eric. I think he and I would have clicked.

All I can say is that I believe your son was very precious to God, so precious, in fact, that He was needed in heaven. I am sure God will abundantly reward you for your sacrifice, and you will spend an eternity with your son and God. My prayers are with you. I pray as God blesses you He will bring comfort to your bleeding soul. Thank you for sharing your grief. I join you in giving many thanks for the precious days that God gave you with your wonderful son as He prepared him for a new life in heaven. With deep love,
-newell

Thanks for your second reply on this one, Larry.  Time does indeed, continue to march on and our children continue to grow up and sometimes away from us in some strange ways as if they were branches on our tree...and we have to let them do this or they will be carbon copies of us, instead of themselves.
If it gives you any comfort...kids who live on the edge and think outside the box, are usually the ones who are the most intelligent.  I bet your son is very bright!
