Snow spirits ride,
they are the
white horses
on spirit lake,

waves are hoofbeats
splash shadows reaching
gray cloud blankets ripped open
battered flag of winter
still standing

wind songs
arrows of sleet
freeze the ears
before sound can strike
and wound the soul

ancient campfires
flicker lights
ice cycles shimmer in sun memory
burning wood is water
unmelting

white horses
never reined
just galloped
lungless breathing
spirits in hollow coats

"white horses
never reined
just galloped"
I like this imagery. It's as it should be, for the natural behavior of the horse is to run free and gallop, unreined, unconstrained by our demands. When my daughter rides, she uses reins and a saddle in English riding school class. But her favorite is to free gallop bareback, in tune with the natural beat of the hoof and the equine's heartbeat. And I know there were other levels of meaning in this poem, but I really love horse imagery.

this is fantastic employ of imagery...
youve created a mystical, hauntingly lovely, ethereal scene for us...very cool write...
reminds me of the Jim Warren white horses used on the Bob Seger album cover.
well done poet sir

my old soul tells me this is something very near the sands of time..and the primal energy of something greater and untamed. I love the word usage and the amount of thought it provokes.

Sincerely,
Regina
