Diary

Within the mind a diary’s kept
Of every single tear I’ve wept
Of every day and night of bliss
Of child’s warm and loving kiss

Most pages now have disappeared
Except the ones I hold most dear
The words of love most sweetly said
The gems of life etched in my head

And some I simply tore myself
The bitter notes upon the shelf
Those memories that I simply let
Fly into breezes of forget

The words I wrote in ink of black
Unleash the thoughts that take me back
To times remembered long ago
Of love denied and love bestowed

Some of life’s entries, old and worn
And those I purposely had torn
Reflect the hand of youthful age
And you were there on every page

It’s not unwise to throw away
The mind’s account of former days
The sorrow that you tore and shred
No longer sleeps in memory’s bed

It flies the winds with wings of gold
Discarded love the pages told
Mind's diary you can rip apart
But not the journal of the heart

Elizabeth Santos

im glad i was the first to reply to this poem.. even though i am a guy i understand the reasons that a diary are kept... diaries are a way to release aggression and all that because if you have alot of stress on you it is better to put it in a book than to express it to the person that you want to .. its a way of being a mediator ....

Isn't it grand that we can pick and choose what to keep and what to discard..?

Keep the good stuff close to heart, Liz.. Toss the rest... You're one brilliant writer, m'friend..

This poem really touched me deeply, coz my diary means alot to me too!
Every page is filled with a different story. Life's daily adventures, the experiences in love, the hurts, the pains of growing up. It is so much a treasure of my life. I am never apart from my diary. I think I have 3 now. I write too much and too long.

Oh my gosh Elizabeth, you have no idea how I relate to this, I tried keeping a journal and all the happy pages were fine, but the sad and bitter ones I could not look at so I ripped them all out..But what of the mind? How do you get them out of the mind? You don't. You just fill your heart with the love of God and He sees you through.. this was magnificent and is now my favorite poem. floria

This is utterly beautiful!!  If only affairs of the heart were chouce, so much heartache could be forsaken.  But then again, could we really love without it?

Liz - Many a time I went to throw out or even burn diaries I kept but stopped myself for the simple reason that in the bad there was always some good, and above all else some experience gained.  I kept them, thank goodness to read and hopefully learn from them.  I absolutelly loved this poem, and you are turning into a "poem machine" of excellence, keep it up!

May I say brilliant; it shines..

This is a keeper, Elizabeth.

All our life's experiences make us who we are.. and what we can survive, we are strong enough to bear.

Thank you for sharing this..

Elizabeth,
a key to your heart's write...how intruguing. I keep a diary if only to plot the journey and this is a perfect reflection of my thoughts...although I could never had said it like this.

I once burned my diaries... but destroying the words didn't erase my past or make the scars disappear. Instead, I lost account of the day to day blessings that kept the more memorable tragedies from overwhelming me... it's a mistake I won't make again. *S*

I love this poem, Elizabeth... it flows flawlessly straight into my heart. *S*
