This poem was inspired by an old, yet timeless song, sung by Helen Reddy, entitled ...

"You And Me Against The World"

There has been many a night where
human companionship was not enough ...
      Unable to console ...
      Unable to fill the deep void ...
      Unable to brush the tears away;
            Nights where only my "best friend" could
            Ease the endless pain I felt.

It is in these times, that a tender song heals my heart;
One I have cherished throughout many a long night.

As a child, it became the song I would sing aloud
for my treasured friend of youth.
      Full of sincerity ...
      Full of love ...
      Full of devotion ...
            For always, this bundle of joy was my child,
            my friend, and my beloved companion.

With her sorrowful passing, I found and shall always treasure
the legacy of love in memories, that moved gracefully from
one generation of companion to the next;

A new bundle of love to comfort me through trying times,
      One whom I would cherish ...
      One whom I would love ...
      One whom I would care for throughout all her days.

And as with my first, this song became
      A part of me ...
      A part of her ...
      A part of the bond so sweetly two entities can share ...
            It again, became the gentle mantra of two beings.

And in the end, when she quietly passed away in my loving arms,
it was this song I whispered to her one final time to light her passage;
      Through my tears ...
      Through my wavering voice ...
      Through my broken heart, I sang ...

      "You And Me Against The World".

So very touching. The last four lines brought with them a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.
Blessed be.

Wonderful and truly touching. After just lossing my grandmother a few weeks ago, this poem hit home. I believe there is a reason I chose it to read. Thank you for your poem.

Kit, I realize this is your poem, but I hope you don't mind if I hold this one terribly close to my heart?  I know this one well, and thank you.

I think perhaps "Baren" was my introduction to your poetry... and I was blown away... not just by your incredible talent but by your magnificent heart. *S* I love this poem on its own merits... and also for reminding me of the day I started seeking out your work. *S* Beautiful!

She is, and always has been my favorite singer, Helen Reddy.  This is the most warming poem I've read in many a day. Thank you for this, Kit.

Do you see the way these words have touched the readers...look at these replies....
each found a part of them in the words.
That is the gift of poetry...and the reason it should be shared....
and you dear poetess....your words always touch deep...that is your gift.

I ask why you come here, you say just because
Could I live without it if I knew what it was
But it really dont matter when you look at me that way.
