They never get sick
though they eat only trash
they do their job well
never asking for cash

all week, they live inside a garage
in their own little corner
dressed in gray camouflage

they never complain
taking all we dish out
though they roll with the punches
we afford them no clout

like soldiers at attention
each Thursday, they stand
at the curb, keeping watch
over all they command

they're relieved of their burden
each Friday morn
by gloved hands
at the end of a green uniform

and their contents are dumped
into a big truck
and compacted
until it turns into muck

my dear friend, Herby Curby
you serve us so well
with all thats within you
you don't mind the smell

you take all our garbage
and take it with grace
I can almost see
the big smile on your face

(giggles) YAY!!! HIP-HIP HOORAY!!! Oh my gosh, I know just how you feel, I'm always anxious for the garbage day to come so the garage would be free of the stench aagin! (kiss on cheek) You always are such a delight to us all, we all love you so very much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Thanks so much Marsha, Noah, Martin and Larry.
I didn't find this in the trash...but I think some people might want it to end up there.
Not many poems are written about garbage collection, so I think I might send it to our local garbage pickup company....to show my appreciation for the difficult job they do and the circumstances under which they work every day.

Lyra,
Cool! Certainly they are people under appreciated. Though when my son was five he admired them greatly and hoped to be one when he grew up. LOL When I was in college Ben Herr was the owner of the garbage company and he called his trucks Ben Herr's Chariots.

LOL this must have been for me. If you can find the humor in garbage then I guess I need to just stop complaining and lighten up.  Thank you for giving me a change in perspective.

Larry, Both of my boys wanted to be garbagemen when they were kids....but they had a very interesting reason.
They figured they could get all the "Playboy Magazines" that people threw out.

Apachecat, thanks for appreciating my poem.
I believe that the trick for getting through life is to find humor wherever you can.
