~* Goodnight My Love *~

The memories of this decaying woman
shine in her eyes, like the stars above,
causing smiles that once filled her heart
as she drifts to days of her youthful love.

Upon her torn flower-papered walls
rows of pictures hang on crooked nails.
So many images fading from her past,
youthful faces, and boats with sails.

She remembers those faces so clearly
like reflections on a lake of rhyme;
they ripple and dance before her,
for a moment, and then, a longer time.

Out into the night she often walks
always forgetting where she was.
Alzheimer's has claimed her future,
fond memories now shrouded in fuzz.

Oh, there are people, who follow her,
making sure she is safe and sound,
for soon all her memories will all be gone,
and her identity, will never be found.

But for now, before that night claims her
she smiles, remembering his gentle face.
I wonder is she smiling at his words of love,
or inhaling the smell of him, if only a trace?

Softly she says, “Goodnight my love”,
as she whispers words into the night,
imagining the echo of his gentle voice
as she feels his arms that held her tight.

How peaceful she settles down to bed,
seeming to hold someone so tight.
Often I wonder if it is her dead husband
there beside her in her bed at night.

*sigh* how tender and gentle this poem is. It touched my heart. I am sure it is her husband embracing her still in her dreams. Wonderful reading...Thank you. Happy New Year. **big hugs**

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

How compassionate you are Sharon, to see within the chambers of this poor ladies heart. It takes a special person to write such a loving and poignant work of art. I'm sure that she feels your love, because anything this strong is very powerful. I wish you LOVE in the New Year ... Love and peace Maggie ((~.~))

Mysteria...this is one of your best, dear
girl...it takes experience of time to age us well, to the point that when we watch, we care...for we are not far from this point ourselves, just as those we observe were not so long ago, us...

well done, my friend, well done indeed...

WE don't know what goes through another's mind, but I believe not all is lost, Somewhere there's something that can not be taken from us, at least not until the end.
THis is beautifully expressed

Thank you all for your caring responses,
for it takes a caring heart to see one!

There are so many tales to be told of these places, and this year that is my goal to tell them.  I will only hope that you enjoy them and come to understand these people and their needs, and that someday it could be us in their shoes!  Thank you so much for reading this.  By the way, Evelyn is real, age 84, and is a sweetheart.

This is so touching! You really do have a very caring heart and it shows through your exquisite poetry. I like the beautiful picture frame too. I also have a poem titled "goodnight my love" but it isnt nearly as wonderful as yours.

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Sharon, this is so so sad, this tore at my heart to feel the tears on her face of remembering her love from before! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, Evelyn will cherish this forever and your loving heart, and my heart is always with this loving woman and hope she will always remember and hold onto her dreams and joys! (kiss on cheek) We all love you so much, sweet friend, sad but very beautiful! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sharon, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Thank you all again, for reading this one (and Michael yes, she lives at Evergreen House) they mix those with this illness in with stroke patients there.  The first Thursday of every month is Altzheimer's Support and I decided to do some poetry during those two hours with family and friends who participate.  That picture is not her though, that is off the internet.  She is a very frail, little, tiny thing, but tough as nail when she wants to be!  This is an illness that is so hard to deal with from the family's perspective so thank you for you kind comments.

Wow...I have a huge soft spot for this Mysteria. I worked in an elder care home and I knew of a George, a Lucy and an Albert. All of whom were lovers of the past..gone but still very much alive in the eyes and hearts of those still here. My heart was filled by their simple memory. Tears my lady. You wrote this from your heart.

Love

Regina - then you certainly know of what I speak, and sometimes don't they warm your heart with their memories?  Thank you.

Amigo - Your comment was absolutely lovely and I shall see it gets read to them, thank you.
