Just Enough
By Larry Chadwick

They were at the terminal gate, bidding each other farewell.
A dad and his daughter, she made his heart swell.
They shared a hug and a kiss, saying goodbye was always tough.
He said “I love you girl, and wish for you enough.”

“Dad, I love you too. It’s been good to stay with you a spell.
I’ll miss you when I go, and wish you enough, as well.”
He turned and walked away, as she left to board the plane.
Tears began to fill his eyes, while he watched her through the window pane.

“Excuse me sir. I saw her go. Please forgive me as I intrude.
I’m curious about what you said, I hope this isn’t rude.
It seemed such a tender sight, but parting is so rough.
Please satisfy my need to know, what you meant about wishing her enough.

It was clear that he was pleased, to talk about her so.
He didn’t seem to hesitate, his face began to glow.
“It’s something that my parents said, to everyone they knew.
Passed down through my family, I like to share it too.”

It’s a simple phrase, that has meant a lot.
About what life can be, and the things that it has taught.
I wish for her enough pain, to appreciate her gain.
I wish her enough pure craziness, to help to keep her sane.

But she lives too far away, this visit is probably her last.
By the time that she returns, I’m sure I will have passed.
So it’s important to me to tell her, in this life she needs enough.
For when I’m gone, I hope she’ll remember all this stuff.

I wish her enough sun, to keep her spirit right.
I wish her enough rain, to appreciate the sun so bright.
I wish her enough gain, to satisfy her need.
I wish her enough loss, to rid all thoughts of greed.

And one last wish, I have for her before I die.
I wish her enough hello’s, to get her through this last goodbye.
I knew that his wish for her, had changed my life that day.
He began to sob, and then he walked away.

Larry,
although I've heard it, it still moved me in this format... I wish you enough.

wishing one rain to appreciate the sun....you have some wonderful thoughts here, Larry. I'm sure kleenixes will flutter, although not by me (it's a guy thing, you know? )

Larry - brought the kleenex, read your writing, kleenex wet. Touching, and very meaningful words, and I felt as if I have lived this one...
