   The life of all living things is a funeral procession;
and in the flow of time, life is but a brief digression.

Though we parade in black, and weep and moan,
or laugh a lot, and pretend it's not -
   death's not - the end -
and even if we wear mocking masks of skulls,
or eat bones of white sugar taken from coffins
   made of chocolate -
our procession never stops, its course never swerves -
our "final reward" remains as sure as taxes -
and learning to die doesn't take a lot of practice.

   The life of a daisy,
   a pigeon or a fly
   is briefer by far -
   but still we all die.

And though the procession for us may be a bit longer
than it is for the bird or the bee, and though we often
seek to gather money, not honey - not the pollen
of flowers, but salaries & fees - this matters
very little, and all that we really add to life
is what we discern, analyze, and discuss,
and then pass along to those
   who will bury us.

And so all I ask of this is that my son survive,
and my daughters and god-daughters thrive,
that the plum and apple trees live,
and the books I write be remembered, for
   the procession must go on.

All life is a funeral procession to bury
   the mourners themselves -
an incessant parade to bury ourselves,
   the mourners -
and all we can add to this funeral procession
is what we teach - though what
   we teach
is everything that we do -
for the life of all living things
   is a funeral procession;
and in the flow of time,
   life is
   but a brief digression.

Dia de los Muertos. Yes, life is a procession, and what we leave behind in memories will not be the gifts under the tree, but the ones from our hearts.
