Tapped My Soul

Yeah, you've heard the story -
smokey bar room, almost cold beer,
slow-dance, country-soul on the juke,
elbows on the bar, chin almost in the brew,
once-sulky, almost smooth, slighty drunk  woman,
beer, dance, bed and in the morning…who the hell are you?

Well that's not what this is about.
This is about Her, yeah, Her,
because I don't know her name.
Definitely not drunk, and so smooth nothing could stick.
That's the way she wanted it.
Slip in, slip out, the wind blows and she's gone.

She tapped my soul.
My heart beat so hard it stole my breath.
I held her tighter than life,
she smiled, kissed the end of my nose -
goodbye.

Goodbye.  Just like that.
No thanks, no "God that was wonderful",
just, Goodbye.

So back to the smokey bar room,
almost cold beer, de da, de da, de da…
still not the story; oh, the empty husk of a man is true enough,
I mean, you just can't experience something like Her
without giving up some of your essence,
without losing a part of yourself.
She takes that when she leaves - you give it to her.
And then you die.  Or think you do, anyway.

She tapped my soul.
She exposed a part of me that wasn't to be seen.
She lay in the cradle of my life,
raised me to the man I never could have been,
drained me of emotion, then gave it back all at once,
exploding my heart in god-like ecstasy.

I held her tighter than life,
she smiled, kissed the end of my nose -
just like that she said goodbye.

Smokey bar room, almost cold beer,
elbows on the bar, eyes on the door…
waiting…

Very visual, that bar. And the feeling..some people do have such an effect that it lasts forever, and we are never the same. Now is that good or bad? I wonder?

This was a little bar on upper Magazine Street, New Orleans, La., just shy of Audubon Park,  back about 1962 or 3, and this guy was sitting there about as described, staring at the door and it just struck me tonight what he was waiting for...

Thanks my friends...for being, my friends.

This is more than good writing, this is conversational storytelling. Like I was right there.

Most excellent!

Amazing how just a thought, a memory of anothers pose can enlighten such detail.
As a writer its set to words, as a poet it is given life, as one who knows love it is given undeniable magic.
Well done!!

"lookin' for love in all the wrong places..."  I liked this very much.  It is getting harder and harder in this technological age to find people with the same interests and goals in life.  We have become almost too diversified, sometimes, I think.  i.e....If they aren't the perfect fit...love 'em and leave 'em!!!

All I can say is WOW!!!  I loved New Ahleans!

jwesley - a woman like this, only once in a lifetime. I pray that you find her, and this time doesn't go...

Love and bars usually don't mix (at least in my case!) this was very heartful expression of love, its a great work!  Thanks for sharing.
