It is November of my 52nd year,
and in the early morning light
the season's first strong frost
is undeniable.

                         As I shave off
my weekend beard, flecked
with white and gray hairs, I see
a surprisingly pale sun shining on a
bleached landscape of once-green
grass, now glowing just faintly
green through a thin patina
of sparkling frost.

My beard disturbs me.
When I am well-shaven, its whiteness
is not so evident, and the hair of my head
keeps enough of the bark-brown color that
it had in my youth to fool me sometimes
into thinking:
"I am, well, at least not old!"

The tall, dry weeds of a distant lot have caught
a cap of shining frost like scepters from a child's
Christmas play, and
some golden brown and dry russet leaves
still cling unexpectedly to trees, but
other, softer,
leaves now hang dark green, limp, and wrinkled,
awaiting death
with the melting of the frost.

It is November of my 52nd year.

Glenn, thank heavens I don't have a beard, but when the gray and white hairs started on my head I pulled them out.  They brought ALL of their friends to help out and now I am mostly white.  The frost will melt but believe me the white on your face and head will not.  Great poem.  ME

What wonderful imagery here, contrasting nature and beard. I especially enjoyed that "bark-brown" hair.
